Re: A mast glueing question

I'd be tempted to take it in stages - I would coat the hollows with epoxy and let that get well set, then put some masking tape (el cheapo will do) on the mating surfaces and either use release wax on the now-epoxied internal surfaces or spray them with the PTFE stuff that we use on luff grooves and...

Hello Thomas, Not yet! Still a work in progress! But I certainly won’t trust the buoyancy tanks! Your comments remind me that my son Alex’s International Canoe, K229 “Ogaf the Unbearable”, reputed to be the last of the cold moulded Nethercots, tends to set off flying high and return to the slipway a...

Re: Good Mastic for clinker seams

There is a compound called "Slick Seam", which is intended for use on carvel boat seams before launching. The idea is that it remains soft and squeezes out as the planks "take up". It might be suitable for a clinker dinghy...

Re: I hope they don't have "high hopes."

I am quite used to evicting ants from the Firefly each spring; they are determined little blighters. I think the dust is actually soil, rather than chewed wood. Mr and Mrs Mouse, who had fun making a nest with Galatea' s Ratsey jib when she was in the museum must have felt a bit peckish because they...

Re: Ben Her restoration

Tremendously good job on matching the planking. I did think of "hardening up" the nails on Galatea, using a clench hammer and a dolly on the inside, but after grasping the transom and wiggling her, to see how sloppy she had become, I concluded that she doesn't yet need it, as she is still ...

Good to see you've made such good progress - do hope you make it to Aldeburgh. Not quite there yet with Nimbus but the new rig (she came without one) should be operational fairly soon and we aim to get her on the water within the near future. Gillian Hello Gillian, I'm not confident about Aldeburgh...

Happily (???) scraping at the inside...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

Sorry, good people - another question... Galatea arrived with almost all her "bits", including two spinnakers, but no spinnaker pole. I am happy to make one if i know what it should look like, what the dimensions should be and what fittings a 1946 spinnaker pole had (was it double ended, e...

Re: Mixing brands of undercoat/primer and topside paint

Can I use International Toplac on a base of Hempel primer/undercoat? Basically, yes. These simple rules and few may help: 1. You can put one pack over any sort of two pack paint (be that two part polyurethane or epoxy) 2. You cannot put any kind of two pack over one pack I've edited this bit: 3. Yo...

Re: Centreboard case not true

Thinking about this, the wringing load imposed on the case whilst sailing upwind is taken by the crewdeck at the top of the case and by the keel/hog structure at the bottom of the case, with not that much load coming on anywhere else. So, since the keel/hog structure is massively strong, it ought to...

Re: Centreboard case not true

What's keeping the water from wetting the sides of the case now? Paint, epoxy, nothing much?

I'd say "yes, you can easily lose that much", but you would really need to lose a bit more.

Centreboard cases are funny things.

Re: TV series coming soon

We can say "1912" for "racing in dinghies designed to be raced", but that is to overlook the RN officers racing in "Pengelly skiffs" which were fourteen foot dinghies intended to be raced. They were called skiffs, not dinghies, but they were a direct ancestor of the Wes...

I really enjoyed that. Very clear. The construction and details (down to the mast jack!) are very similar to the Uffa Fox built Fourteens.

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

You can understand why Dinghy sailing was a fairly wealthy persons sport when you see amount of work in pre-War boats. What would on of these boats cost to have built today? Mast - £850 from Collars... see price list for that and the boom... and keep in mind that Uffa thought that masts were dispos...
