Merlin 235

A new owner is sought for "Squirrel", the oldest Holt 'Riant' design sailing. She is a regular competitor on the vintage Merlin DeMay circuit and has won a number of these events over the years (I have owned her since 1997). "Squirrel" is varnished inside and out and has the full...

Re: Merlin, tacking the top batten

As previous posters have said a good roll tack is essential and you could try a softer batten. You need to be very careful when attempting to update an old rig as usually the sail is not cut to suit an early Procter rig. You cannot expect a sail that was perhaps cut for example for an M7 to set well...

Re: Please help me choose a dinghy cover?

Really good strong canvas cover (blue) with good skirt, Dutch lacing from mast to stem, Velcro at shrouds and under-boat straps with quick release buckles and draw string round hull. Only problem were about 10 days late on original delivery date but did not matter as ordered over winter and boat was...

Re: Please help me choose a dinghy cover?

As Neil says you need firstly to decide if you want PVC or breathable (usually canvas but other more exotic materials available). Certainly if hull is wood would recommend breathable, well worth the extra. Have recently used Goldfinch Covers of Whitstable for breathable cover for a Merlin. They have...

Re: On ebay

Garry - pop your specs. on - see that metal plate - a 12. The Merlin with that number is a Hoare boat not a W&C.

Re: ebay

This is definitely a 12 - the metal plate gives this away and M/R 1776 is a Bob Hoare Mk.9 and this has a W & C name plate.

Re: Bleaching wooden hull

Like Chris, I have used Oxalic acid many times with great success. Remember to wash treated area, when bleached, with water to remove residual acid.

Re: Merlin Rocket Wanted

Well, 2967 is not a Smokers she is a Hooligan built by Keith Probert circa. 1975. She was designed for the lightweights as opposed to the Smokers which was aimed at the other end of the market. I owned a Hooligan some years ago (2941) - nice boat but very slow tacking. Would not recommend for inland...

Re: Mast fitting removal..

Almost certainly parts of Dangly Pole set-up. I would keep fitting above goose neck as can be used for jib stick if dangly pole is not set up.

Re: What is it?

It is definitely a RF - I sail in one frequently. The red horizontal stripe above the logo is also typical.
