Re: CVRDA 15th National Rally, Clywedog SC, 23-25 August

I thought he said his sailing was inconsistent but my hearing isn't what it used to be. Has he tried Tena pads?

Re: CVRDA 15th National Rally, Clywedog SC, 23-25 August

I am certainly hoping to come to Clywedog BUT I need a crew. Is there anyone who would like to crew in Gannet - a 1951 Merlin. Do you have anyone at the club Keith who could help out. I hope to arrive on the Saturday midday. Thanks. You can reply here or email.

Re: Shearwater 19th July

I enjoyed it thoroughly. Hard to believe it was so wet and harder to believe that there had been no rain at home all day even though about 30 miles away!! AND even harder to believe that I hung the cotton sails out to dry and drips were coming off them but in less than two hours in the sun on the sa...

Re: Making you own boat cover - good idea?

Black is probably the worst colour for absorbing heat. If it's plastic it is worse. I had one - - it was old and awful and went brittle. I got mine from Rain and Sun? Excellent over the last 6 years.

Re: Brass mast step plate?

I actually went the other way on my mast and fitted a sheet of tufnol to the bottom of the wooden mast which was getting pretty chewed at he base/ I can see that alloy to wood might need a sliver of tufnol. Why not use a wooden step block and face the bearing surface with tufnol?

Rupert - surely you realise that a sieve uses gravity to allow water out. A boat uses gravity to allow water in!!

Secret Water Merlin 111 revamp

Since restoring and sailing Secret Water a few years ago now I have always realised that she was not "quite right". A previous owner had added a full length of timber in triangular section to widen her by at least 4" along her length, I guess to give more sitting out leverage and help...

Re: creative buoyancy

Remember Chris when I got Gannet there were about 60 4-pint plastic milk bottles all roped together under the decks!! Get drinking. Of course you might be quicker with the internals of wine boxes - really tough those things and referred to by a post grad student of mine as a "handbag of happine...

Heat gun

As sod's law was firmly in operation in my workshop last week I had a plank of about 4" wide and 5' long to remove the varnish from when the lights went out on my old heat gun. I looked around the stores for a new one aware of the fact that some have a very high heat with the attendant scorchin...

Re: Merlin No.8 on the 'bay

No 8 has been sold on ebay for £475. Not a lot for a boat which appears in a number of old Merlin photos. Let's hope that it will be seen around the CVRDA events. If you have bought her - congratulations!!

Re: Merlin No.8 on the 'bay

As someone who races in a mixed handicap fleet with a 62 year old Merlin I get a handicap allowance decided upon by the MROA - age dependent only and decreasing annually. No equipment/originality is taken into consideration. Forgetting handicaps, I know that against many sailors I have no hope - the...

Re: National Rally - who is coming?

Having spent nearly two days in bed - and most of that time asleep I am feeling a deal better and am now on antibiotics to try to clear up the infection. I was really disappointed to miss out on the main event but really on the Sunday morning just knew I was not going to manage - and as Trish will t...
