Thingummyjig

What's the thing called, often seen on more modern boats, a bar that goes on the top of the boom diagonal to the mast and does the job of a kicker/vang or whatever you want to call it? The do-hickey? The whatchummecallit?

Confused,

Re: Sparkle, New Gunnels and Fordeck

Which is the one that goes black, if you are not careful?

I vaguely recall a discussion some time ago about this very subject, but am not sure what to search for.

Cheers

Staples - I will give it some thought

Back to my original question:

Wood for the gunnels? Light colour to offset the mahogany?

Re: N3246

Sorry Stuart,

Your boat is a late 4 planker. So you should be okay for the 4 plank mini-series assuming the N12 are running one next year. It is a lot more developed and later than mine : ) I think the were only 4 or 6 events held this year as a trial.

Good luck,

Re: N3246

That is nice to know, as if I were to go down to 1 boat, it would be Sparkle.

That said, the wife is talking about renaming Planet to Planter, if I do not watch out.

Re: Sparkle, New Gunnels and Fordeck

As far as the foamy glue is concerned, I used it on the only other re-deck I did - a Cadet, and it was fine. I think OBC has hit the nail on the head - use it sparingly. I have a limited number of clamps. The deck I pulled off was nailed and lasted 47 years. The deck is only coming off as the top la...

Sparkle, New Gunnels and Fordeck

So, finally, I have bit the bullet and remove the gunnels and the foredeck of my beloved Sparkle. The gunnels put up a terrific fight it has to be said, and as a result of their removal, I have a little collateral damage to repair. But before I ring Robbins up I need some advice on what I need to or...

Re: N3246

The National 12 Classic scene seems to mainly be aimed at the Clinker boats, from what I can see. But there is now renewed interest in the '4 plankers' from the 70's, with a 'mini series' being run for them this last year. Hopefully this is a good sign of things to come. Smooth finished molded boats...

Yes, I agree with Rupert and Michael, get it on the water as soon as you can. It sounds like I am nit picking on what a very well turned out boat. But make no mistake, it would have been mine had I get there first. And if the tank is water tight it would be staying. I was just talking to Jim Aldis (...

Re: National 12's of the 60's and 70's - Knowledge Please?

I have seen a couple of boats of this era that have had these tanks removed, which was why I mentioned it. Also you will find that the National 12 is a very responsive boat to balance and trim, with a need to move your weight quite far back when going downwind in a blow. Some designs even have a ten...

Pay particular attention to the rear buoyancy tank. I have to say I prefer bags at the back. But I could forgive it if it were one of mine as she is in such lively order.

Re: Making you own boat cover - good idea?

I would like to add to this thread on some recent experience. I thought in the short term I would attempt to replicate the old poly cover with some new poly and plastic eyes, etc. I was disappointed to find a general lack of a boom up covers from many sources for an old N12, even if I had the spare ...

Re: glues for cold moulding

I like the foamy stuff.but I understand that you have to be careful where and how you use it. I am about to embark on a redeck of my favourite National 12 and I will be using the balcotan equiv and g4 as the basis of the repair. However I will be using a nailed redeck method as a nod to the way it w...

Re: Spider...removing the cobwebs! N12 2523

That might be a better answer, thanks, although I am sure I could push the blighters through a bit of tape if the need arose.....But I do want to spend as little time as possible under the boat.
