Re: Yonghy Bonghy Bo

While on the topic of old Oppies does anyone know if they used to have "OP" as the class insignia before the combined I and O? When I was a Sea Scout in the early 1970s our Troop had two Oppies with OP on the sails and sail numbers, if recall correctly, 83 and 86.

Re: Boatbuilders

It was an interesting experience, the wingsail fitted to MV Ashington was a winner. I'd forgotten the Ashington. She once got me really confused during a forenoon watch in the Irish Sea. There had been a contact on radar for a while then this dirty great rectangle climbs over the horizon. I was qui...

Re: Good book

My father had a copy of this, and as he never throws away books it must be somewhere around in my parents' house. I remember reading it in the early 70s, fairly soon after I learnt to sail. And what a far cry it was from mucking about in Mirrors and Coypus.

Re: Happy Christmas

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday (which, by no means is meant to be prejudicial to those of an antipodean’s nature), pract...

Re: Bosun

I was first introduced to Bosuns at Calshot where we used them for the Hampshire Schools' Regatta. Compared to the Scout Coypus (which were all I had raced in before) they were competative and they behaved as the manuals said they should. Apart from their weight their other main drawback was how dif...

No record on the Graduate database for number 1991. If it is a Grad she would have been built 1967 or '68

New Home Page

Have just logged on and was pleasantly suprised by the new home page. Is this a permanent change or just for the remainder of the 10th anniversay year? The changing background to the title pane is a nice touch - though I will have to keep refreshing to see how many there are - or is it taking random...

Re: Roadford 10th Anniversary Event. August Bank Holiday Weekend

Unfortunately there's no way I can make Roadford however, after the event last weekend at Thames, I've now got a CVRDA banner that needs to get there somehow. There was no one left after racing on Sunday who was definitely going to the nationals to give it to. So before I pay to post it to Roger (p...

Re: And the last shall be first

I agree that feels good to have your participation in any event acknowledged. Other hobbies (OK so sailing is more than a hobby - passion? disease??) are awarded medalions, small plaques etc for partipation in shows etc. Visit a steam fair or model railway exhibition and a number of exhibitors will ...

Re: Changes to Constitution for 10year anniversary?

I have been reading this topic with interest and although I have only attended two events thought I would put in my two pen'orth. There are two questions that should be asked; a) Are there owners entering boats that don't fit the ethos of the CVRDA? b) Are there any boats out there that do fit the e...

Re: Aged Oppy

Question for the Oppie experts: has the Optimist sail emblem always been the same? I ask because back in early 70s our Scout Troop had two aged Oppies (nos 83 & 85 I think) with "OP" on the sails. Like jpa's 87 these were ply on a frame and the buoyancy was polystyrene blocks in the bo...

Looks like a Grad to me. If the sail number matches the hull she was built round about 1968 and was originally called "Magician"

Could be worth 99p just to get myself a wooden mast and boom.

Re: WANTED : Boat to hire for Poirot!

If a modern built traditional boat is suitable how about something by the Barrow Boat Company, such as their 12 ft Swallow? http://www.barrowboats.co.uk/barrowboat/swallow12.html OK, she is a touch smaller than 14 to 16 ft suggested, but is described as having a capacity for 4 adults and to my way o...
