One of the main points of "preparation" is surely that it prevents breakdowns and thus the trunkating of our time spent afloat - though gear failures do remove one excuse! For me one of the best times are that post race hour in the cockpit -alone- or on point or beach just looking at the w...

The Dr Curry is I suspect Manfred Curry who wrote a number of truly excellent books on sailing hydro and aerodynamics a German he moved to America eventuly. Charles would have been a teenager in 1930.

The trick with those old 14 Spinnakers was to have the paddle to hand so that the crew could lift the foot for a peek underneath it!
