Re: Thank you, Ed, Rupert and Mungo (Fairey Marine Hull Repa

We got the Firefly upside down in the shed and stripped the varnish and put in a couple of small patches following the excellent advice given and are now working on the area just ahead of the transom... All three veneers have "gone" as had the aft section of the keel. Having taken that off...

Re: Can I ask advice on an old I14 mast...

The cross trees wouldn't have been bog standard alluminium but Durallumin from the aircraft industry. In his Specifications he actually names it as that. You can obtain something that is the same but I have forgotton what the specification code is but you could find it quite easily. There is a prod...

Can I ask advice on an old I14 mast...

Galatea, I14 no 478, has a very old, possibly original mast - hollow spruce, two integral winches, three diamonds and two parrot perches. The 17 gauge piano wire used for the diamond shrouds and jumper shrouds isn't the problem - it is stainless and it seems fine. The problem is to do with the strut...

Re: Dinghies, raters and canoes in Hope's edition of Dixon K

I only have the 8th edition, revised by John Leather. Are they very different? Just realised that is the manual of yacht and boat sailing. Has canoe stuff in it. They are somewhat different as far as the plates are concerned; Linton Hope unsurprisingly included a good many of his own designs and he...

Dinghies, raters and canoes in Hope's edition of Dixon Kemp.

Dixon Kemp's Manual of Yacht and Boat Sailing and Architecture was the Bible of Victorian yacht and boat design. The eleventh edition was edited by Malden Heckstall Smith, who wrote about sailing, and Linton Hope, who wrote about design and drew the plates. I only have the "plates" volume ...

Re: Classic International 14 for sale, and advise please

ZEUS has the original headsail sheet fairleads. Both boats have had the centreboard modernised and the differential winch removed.

Re: Classic International 14 for sale, and advise please

Dear William, Then you have the original mast I think. You just need the jack, to be original, but it would be easy to make a wood tenon to do the job, losing about an inch of mast height in the process. I'd think this is the safest place to advertise the pair, but I recall that that Peter and Richa...

I finally made the trek; I was asked if I had had trouble finding them, and replied that it had taken me 45 years! Epifanes 1.2 litres square can £28.50. The purist may note that they have three strand cotton rope in dinghy sheet sizes... also ship's biscuits!

Re: Classic Boat Insurance

When I owned Rannoch (1947 Uffa Fox International canoe) a few years ago, I was in a similar situation. Ended up speaking to someone at WH Insurance (http://www.dinghyinsurance.com). They were very understanding, even told me I was underinsuring the boat when I gave them a value. They understood th...

I do hope you will bring this beautiful boat the short distance to Aldeburgh for next years classics weekend I shall. I promise! Now if someone were to cast their eye on the For Sale section they would find her sister ZEUS, newly posted for sale by Bill 123, and we could have a race on level terms...
