Re: 'rare' I 14 over in the US

Steve, thanks for looking after her and passing her on all ready scraped and sanded!

I'll post some more pics shortly.

Re: 'rare' I 14 over in the US

This one is 24'4" tip to toe, subtract 2' for hog to deck and we have 22'4". I can only surmise that it has shrunk over time...!

Re: 'rare' I 14 over in the US

For illustration this is a 1959 hog stepped Merlin Proctor mast...being a 'river' Merlin the mast is particularly tall, my memory suggests taller than I14s https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2902/14660797795_3b7c669a99_c.jpg DSC00946 by dralowid , on Flickr Drum operated kicker, rig tensioned via jib ha...

In search of a trolley

"Well," you might say, "aren't we all?" Anyway, I'm looking for a trolley for an old Merlin (14ft), don't mind doing a bit of work on it if needs be, say around max 40-50 miles from Chichester. Anyone got something suitable rotting in their back garden, or even something better??...

Re: Minim gets a make-over

The one thing to remember about dark colours (and black) is that they get very hot out in the sun. Doesn't do an awful lot of good to joints and seams etc.

Re: Spider...removing the cobwebs! N12 2523

To vary the aches in my back I leave the boat on trolley or trailer and then jack and chock up one side, sometimes taking the wheel off the other to get a different angle on things. It is extraordinary how changing the 'angle of heel' from time to time can increase accessibility and show you what yo...

Re: Too much Duck, and extras...

Is there not an old Napoleonic fort or similar in the Portsmouth area that could be used for long term classic dinghy storage?

The 'Duck' is very special to me, the first boat I ever sailed before progressing (or regressing) to Scows but the garage is full!

Re: Clinker National 18 on eBay

Shame. When you think of the thousands people are prepared to spend on a tubby 12 foot clinker 'character' boat, the fact that a bit of history like this has no bids at £500 with a day and a half to go is sad. The difference in practicality must be huge though. If I had an army of helpers, a 4x4 an...

Re: Clinker National 18 on eBay

Lovely but I wonder how may of us restrict our enthusiasm to boats that will fit in our garages?

Re: Sea Fire on the bay

The brochure says "tumble home" deck design provides comfortable sailing. I assume this is not refering to the hull but to the deck and I can only imagine that it means something like the sloping inwards deck of a Solo.... Traditionally tumble home refers to the topsides turning inwards a...

Re: Early alloy masts

Thanks for the suggestions. The internal halyards are some sort of thin hard multi coloured braided cord. Not sure if it Dyneema but not wire. The rest looks pretty much like common sense and apart from obvious maintenance, best left alone. If I get really worried I could hire one of those drain ins...

Early alloy masts

I have just taken over MR 950 (1959) from Steve Hawkins. Very happy and looking forward to getting her out on the water, she will make a nice contrast to a Tideway... The boat has a tall hog stepped Proctor alloy mast which is presumably original and is not anodised. It has probably spent most of it...
