Re: 'Automatic' lifejackets
Yes, this is a current family debate and I think we tend to agree with you. I wear an automatic lifejacket when I do not expect to fall in the water. Out on a stable fishing boat or sailing something very steady like our Tideway. When out on something livelier I wear a buoyancy aid. I have seen an i...

Re: 'Automatic' lifejackets
Thanks very much for this. It has been followed step by step. All OK, I have replaced the auto firing capsules since they were out of date. Cylinder condition and weight fine etc etc. I think there is a lot to be said for taking good care of these things and not leaving them lying about in the botto...

Identifying varnish types
The boat I am working on seems to have been done with different types of varnish. They react differently when attacked with a hot air gun. One bubbles nicely, scrapes off OK and when the scrapings have cooled they crumble to dust. This is familiar to me and I assume is good old fashioned 'traditiona...

'Automatic' lifejackets
Maybe this is a silly question...apologies if you think so...but... How can you tell if your ten year old automatic life jackets are still in working order? They hold air. The gas bottles are clean and not rusty. They are well screwed in. The indicators tabs are all green. Everything looks fine. I n...

Re: cutting out plywood decks
Try using a jigsaw with a hacksaw blade in it. Slower and much more controllable. Tidy finish on ply
Alternatively you can get downward cutting blades for those of us who are so spatially inept that we don't understand upside down shapes.

Oxalic acid
On the internet I read that oxalic acid can be effective in removing weathering stains from wood before varnishing. I do not always trust what I read in the internet... I'm stripping what's left of the varnish off the inside of a clinker boat and will probably give it the Deks Olje D1 treatment. So ...

Re: Covers
Thanks, I will ask around. Good point about checking fit on a 'loose' one design...for reasons I won't go into (but you can probably guess) I have two of these boats now and they are very different from each other. I guess a cover for a wooden boat should be breathable? Or is this an old wives tale?...

Anyone have any recommendations for someone who makes sensibly priced good quality over boom covers?

Re: Knee protection
Have you tried the ones for roofers and tilers etc? Builders yards sell 'em. My favourite chandlery, Screwfix, has them too...as do Toolstation, swivelling ones!

Re: Int. 14 on ebay
Although sold last year (I think) this boat is still on the Bosham SC website For Sale pages... I quote from the original advertisement and apologise for infringing any intellectual property rights but wouldn't know who to ask: "Built in 1961 by Souters, designed by Proctor. Beautiful boat from...

Re: Int. 14 on ebay
The seller says: The boats number is K772, and goes by the name Suki. Most of the boat is in good condition, and has sails, mast, boom, rudder etc. The damage relates solely to the outer layer of its 3 layers of mahogany. This is warping off the layer underneath, and is a little more of a project th...
