Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

Nice to see some skip diving activity. 15+ years ago I found out our Students' Union was getting refurbished. The bar top was the best part of 100' of 1" Mahogany. I went halves with a mate (think it cost us £30) and we went in on a Saturday morning and had the lot out in an hour and on the ro...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

Aaaaaargh bums!! No no no no... Didn't get there until 1pm and horror of horrors I spot a massive red skip underneath the demolition grab which as I park is dropping a quarter of a ton of timber into it. Legged it across the road and collared the charge hand... I explained my urgent need and...

Re: Unvarnished Mirror.

Curious? How can it have got to that stage of seeming completion without the d/b case being firmly in situ :?: :?:

Re: Sail logo to identify

Cor that's annoying. Been searching sail insignia as the time allows for 3 days now; I got nuttin'. Even tried googling "sail logo yin yang" on account of the device underneath the loaf/crown/door knob; still nuttin'.

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

And Lady Luck digs my crumpled number out of the bottom of her handbag yet again! They're demolishing the old local Nat West bank branch, looks like it was erected in the 50's and having used it a couple of times I remember it being crammed with teak skirtings and architraves, mahog counter tops and...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I'm enjoying reading about your exploits and some good ideas coming up. If you can get the launch scooter to work there's a fortune to be made at Osprey, Finn and GP14 meetings! The possibility hadn't escaped me; maybe 10% of the motivation. As for ideas; if I do nothing else in this life th...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

Shaping a 6ft board in a 9ft kitchen ain't easy... actually about 7ft when you deduct the depth of the worktops. https://s6.postimg.org/4uw3atj7l/sturdy_enough.jpg Tools used were a cheap 'Silverline' plane and a top quality razor sharp rasp. The plane was unusable out of the box and as with most ch...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

The last time I saw a label like that I was in Wickes... In a skip outside Wickes you mean? Giving some thought about how to remove the most complete/least damaged side to use as a template for the 12mm replacement panels. I half heartedly drilled off a few of the screw heads hoping that the ...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

Put my dibs on the sheet of 12mm birch ply which I'll pick up on Monday (touch wood  ) but thought I should do a bit of ad hoc durability testing on a few scraps. https://s6.postimg.org/jdf91p6kh/Birch_ply_-_boil_test.jpg A 40 minute simmer and not a sign of any delamination. With that establi...

Re: Hull paint

Found a fairly broad but concise discussion of the subject here by someone called Paul Grimes; was a Collegiate All-American sailor at Brown University, an engineer for Tillotson-Pearson, and is currently owner of Fusion Composites in Middletown, R.I.

Oh you are kidding...! https://s6.postimg.org/s6i9jccqp/A_void_right_where_you_don_t_want_it.jpg Got the shape scribed out and its mirror onto that bit of 18mm 'marine' ply and this morning trotted across the road to a local firm who cut it out on the biggest fretsaw you've ever seen. Yer ...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

Had a first good look at one of the batteries this morning, ooh 'ello, gel cells, they're pricey items, (£120-150)... (each!) and a pair of them as well 8) nicey. Except that clapping the meter across it gives a terminal voltage of 1.9v  Rats! That's the voltage across a single cell so I'm gue...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I don't think your scooter thing will work. I seriously doubt that you'll get sufficient traction without an adult sitting on it. Plus the thing is going to have survive immersion when launching and recovering the boat. Both fair points: traction? I'll have to suck it and see. That said there's a l...

Re: Hull paint

Alternatively should I accept that a miracle with sail no. 708 is never going to be a speed demon and have done with it and get sailing Yeah probably. I've no idea of the actual degree of enhancement such treatment would get you, what do we think? a tenth of a knot if that? Hull form and sail trim ...
