Great to see Michael. She will be a lovely boat to sail when you are finished.

Re: Nice magnetic Compass.

Yes the 'fluxgate' is used to reference the gyro compass to magnetic north....Blimey that digging back. Years ago, whilst undergoing my trade training, I happened to mention to my dad on a visit home (who sailed out of pool at the time) that I was working on and studying gyro compasses. He suggested...

Re: Nice magnetic Compass.

Pull up a sandbag and I'll tell you a story.........When I was a Flight Systems technician in the RAF, part of my trade was to maintain the Gyro compasses in aircraft. If you want a vintage one, expect it to weigh the same as a small child...Even one fitted to fairly modern aircraft (the RAF did not...

Re: Mast fitting removal..

You might find that the mast is not the original. My N12 sports a mast of a Lark.

Re: Old Firefly bits

Wow.

As far as buoyancy is concerned, I have something very similar fitted in the back of my N12 Sparkle. Only in a very fetching yellow.

Rupert, thank you for the offer. I will see what I can do with them.

Re: Old Firefly bits

Michael, I was offered a chrome tube bailer for 'some monies' by someone from the Firefly website. However I declined, as it did not match the brass one I already had. My 'complete' bailer does not have a handle, rather it just has a nut on the top. I have spoken to Mr Thresher, but alas, he does no...

Re: Can someone lend me a trailer??

I have one you can borrow, but you will have to pick it up from, and drop it off to, Swindon, and I will need it back for the end of season shuffle for my N12 and Firefly.

Re: Buying advice, please....

This is a very different animal that the boat you were looking at earlier. I.e. it is a nailed clinker design, not a 'four planker'.

You might be surprised at how different the two boats are.

It does not look dissimilar to Planet 672, in design, another Holt boat.

Good Luck.

Re: Work on Planet, N12 N672 1948

Just goes to show what a lot of old varnish does. I thought that since they were so dark, and had so many holes in them, that the floor boards must have been made of something similar to the hull. There you go. But your pictures seem to have got everyone running for cover...... Keep in touch. Cheers

Re: Buying advice, please....

I would go and see it. Look for any signs of rot where the varnish has lifted, and wet wood, any lifting paint, fine cracks going with the grain, and any signs of delamination of the ply, especially in the floor and where it has been twisted and curved during its construction. At the very least you w...

Re: Work on Planet, N12 N672 1948

Michael, I am glad to see you have started this thread. Although I am a little embarrassed. Was there still a wood shortage in 1948, when this boat was built? With regard to the plank lengths. Its seems that the floor boards were multi-tasking. I.e. keeping her together, hiding her weaknesses and pr...

Re: Old Firefly bits

Sam, its the one with the becket I am missing. As long as it is not too large. I do have a couple of mighty looking beasts with ratchet mechanisms in them that are far too large.

If it is surplus to requirements then I would be obliged.
