I remember thinking an Otter was fantastic when I first saw one. Unfortunately I couldn't afford one (I had saved up £25, a Mirror kit was £73 and I was 10). So my brother and I bought a Brandy Hole One Design instead. Is that one in your books Rupert or is it one for the Christmas quiz?

How can a Taylor possibly be a classic, only yesterday I lusted after one as they were the bees knees, or was it longer ago than that? Glad you've got a mast sorted out. I wondered about buying the boat but then I'd never have got on with rebuilding the Fairey. Case is now out, rotten part of hog cu...

I sailed the Finn at Portishead yesterday in the Pill race. I was rather amused by the Race Officer and another man who were quite concerned that I'd put my handicap down on the entry as 1072 when their latest book said a Finn should be 1069. I explained that as my boat was over 40 years old I was u...

Can you expain what you mean by a bulge, and have you checked it's not the same on both sides. All Finns have a 'tumblehome' near the stern which means the deck is narrower than the hull. Check if its not just this you're looking at and have a look at other Finns. The classic Finn page on the BFA we...

Thanks Rupert. I had wondered the same about the end grain. The Finn does not have a keel so I think I'll have to let in a small piece of hardwood.

I've had to accept that I cannot sail my Finn much longer before I have to replace the rotton centreboard case, particularly as I've now found that part of the hog adjacent to it is also rotten. I've taken measurements and I was planning on building a new case before taking the old one out. I also p...

OK Rupert,
If I write a dit on classic Finns I'll get it checked by a couple of others and see if it's suitable for adding to the classes page.

Congratulations on a good looking restoration. As a teenager in the 70s I raced a Swift with my brother at Leigh-on-Sea. We also cruised it often across the estuary to Kent and also up the coast to Brightlinsea and Maldon, sleeping on the bridge deck with a tent over the boom. Ours was a Mk2, but my...

I think the interest in the website could be increased if it was more of a resource. The hints and tips sections are very good, how about also adding more to the classes page. We could have a bit of a history of many of the CVRDA boats on the pages. I know Alan tried to get the Finn class interested...

Trevor. It is possible to sail from Brightlingsea to Burnham but it's quite a long way and quite a way offshore as you sail outside the mud flats. I used to do this quite regularly in my Finn as I was too young to drive, so I used to sail to all the open meetings from Maldon, travelling to Maylandse...

Thanks Ed, I just thought I'd ask! I don't subscribe to the theroy that anything was added to the deck, the screw holes are where the rolled decks are attached to the inwhale and exactly the same can be seen on all other Fairey Finns with original decks. The mods must have been somewhere else. The F...

Hi Peggy, If I understand you correctly your kicker will not be powerful enough to do much good. The most you'll get with just single pulleys is 3:1 on the boom, then doubled to the control lines = 6:1. A lever will normally give about 7:1, with a 3:1 pulley to it that's 21:1 then the doubling gives...

Neil,
I noticed it has a makers plate on the thwart. Mine doesn't but does have a number carved in the hog at the stern. Would this be a builders number and is there someone to tell what it means if it is?

Hi Peggy. There's three ways to rig the kicker. The most common and current method is to use a Needlespar lever. This is a specialist fitting that pivots through a sleeved part of the boom and the wire from around the front of the mast attaches to the top of the lever (above the pivot). A tackle run...
