Re: Ply

Thing is if you get it to a close match now by the time it has had a seasons sunshine it stands out again as it fades / doesn't fade at the same rate.....

Re: 1960 Sailing Tutorial on YouTube

I don't think the Ent with a rear deck is an Ent.... Looks like a GP14 to me.

Re: Thorough cleaning of covers

I have read that Thompsons water seal for brickwork is great for re-proofing covers and spinnakers at half the cost of Fabsil.... I have not tried it though!

Re: Rats, Moths and Mould...

We have to remove sails from boats in September as the mice start to make winter nests. One year Chris Herbert left his pink spinnaker in the chute of his Osprey - when he rounded the windward mark and hoisted the lake was scattered with pink confetti whilst he reached away powered by a large pink d...

Re: Why does my Epoxy come out all orange peely?

It is also possible to get small bubbles forming and bursting to leave the surface dimpled if the epoxy gasses off whilst curing - thin coats in a reasonable curing temp helps with this but to be honest with me this sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't - I have not tracked down the cause but if I...

Re: displacement and stability?

Think there must be a lot more too it than weight - one of the tippiest boats I have sailed (I have always been too large for a Moth....) is an RS Vision - this lump of thermomoulded soapdish weighs a fair old bit and is quite beamy and slow. Why it is so tippy I don't know. My Miracle which weighs ...

Re: Can anyone help please? The Osprey, some information?

Of the top of my head and therefore probably completely wrong..... As far as I am aware there was only ever one MK 1 built for the Olympic Trials against the Flying Dutchman and Coronet. The Mk II was the production version built by or supplied as a kit from Bell Woodworking. The MK IIa lost the rea...

Re: Not an Osprey?

My "Racing" Osprey was tweaked to the nearest millimeter when she was built by John Claridge. She has two large sections of her rocker built up with epoxy and microballoons to get her in class. Funnily enough her 20 year old hull shape is very similar to the latest mark 4 Ospreys.

Re: anyone want a vintage fireball?

Nessa - instead of cam cleats you take a couple of turns of the genoa sheet around the snubbing winch, which is like a ratchet block in that it turns only one way. You can then easily hold the load on the sheet. The old Foreland one designs that were sailed at Broadstairs all had snubbing winches. A...

Re: Bill Kempner on Fireball

Ted Heath was presented with a set of Rolly Tasker fireball sails by the Australian government whilst on a visit there. My father who sailed FB No. 20 at Broadstairs acquired these sails from Ted and still has them in the cupboard under the stairs for some reason. Unfortunatly it would appear FB20 w...
