Re: Which Singlehander?

The only thing I would say about builders is that although there are mostly Winner built boats around, they can be a little on the fragile side. The Rondars tend to be more robust. Was there not a Batt Europe around, or was that just the sails?

Re: Which Singlehander?

It was definitely a retrograde step for women's sailing when they brought in the radial over the Europe. A recent Y&Y comparison test showed the Europe to be a far superior boat in every way. I had a Europe for a while (when I was at Shearwater) and even though strictly speaking I was too heavy,...

Re: Which Singlehander?

The Europe is a great boat - much more boat like than a topper etc. But as David says, where you sail and who you sail with/against should always be taken into consideration. I would have thought 40kg definitely on the light side for a Europe. Why does the sailor dislike the topper/tera type boats? ...

what time is it?

I appear to be in a time warp (no bad thing) and no, I don't mean that I am surrounded by talk of olde boats, I mean that the board time as I see it appears to be inconsistent with real time (if there is such a thing - sorry, philosophy grad, what do you expect?) Is there a way of making them match ...

Re: Lidl again!!

Looks like a bargain! My retail discovery for today has been Screwfix - soooo much cheaper for sanding stuff. I shall never go to B&Q, Homebase, Focus etc again!

Re: Int 14 773

I have to say the cockpit of this boat looks very similar to that of my lovely Agamemnon, but the hull looks quite different - hard to judge from the photo though, plus mine is not painted. I have had some time off scraping this week to give my poor hands a rest and to jaunt down to Devon to collect...

Re: Traditional Boat Buying Research

I took the chance to say that my sailing club has recently bought a traditional style lugger as a teaching boat. It is fantastic for taking out small groups of younger children, even on their tiny lake, especially for pirate theme days. The kids are very safe because there is seating all the way rou...

Re: Agamemnon - i14 869

It's a small world isn't it: Agamemnon's new crew's father is also a Lloyd's Name and a quick phone call reveals he knew Jonny Prentice pretty well.... David, I have in mind exactly the sheeting arrangement you describe. I've used it on lots of boats and it works pretty well in my opinion. I can't a...

Re: Agamemnon - i14 869

David, I too have learned that lesson the hard way - I destroyed a marauder using exactly that method! So while I won't be going to contender style extremes (I currently use a 32:1) I do need a bit of oomph in there to keep that main under control. I do hope to use the trapeze at some stage, but I d...

Re: Agamemnon - i14 869

We have measured the genoa at 8 sq metres, the main (very long and thin) at 8.5 sq metres, and the spinnaker at 14 sq metres.

Re: east is east and west is west

Where do I sail? My contender is kept at Oxford SC, but I do try to do the circuit and even went out to Canada for the Worlds this year. I keep my phantom at Priory SC in Bedford because that is where I do the majority of my instructing and it is easier to get to than OSC. However, we will shortly b...

Re: Agamemnon - i14 869

Well, I'm thinking either the split tail or the transom sheeting (laser style), as David described. I'm not over thrilled by transom sheeting in case I forget which boat I'm in and whip the tiller round the back......then again, the till shouldn't be that long should it! I am concerned about the kic...

Re: Agamemnon - i14 869

The scraping and scratching is actually going quite well now I have discovered the miracle powers of the heat gun (wish I'd known this when doing my phantom). Anyway, to keep my self motivated whilst scraping away I try to envisage the fitting out (the exciting part!). Judging by the holes and misce...
