I realise I am late to the party but I can chime in with a "me too" story. We were taking a group of Sea Scouts up the Itchen in a gig with a Seagull long shaft on the back when the helmsman struck what he thought was an underwater obstruction and the outboard jumped off the transom and sank. Fortunately the "obstruction" turned out to be the river bed! A couple of us got out and waded around, the engine was soon found, remounted and even restarted after a few pulls! The Scouts were grateful as otherwise it would have meant getting the oars out and pulling several mile back down river against the start of the flood.

The Divers are not due till later this month, I dont think they will find the engine, the X buoy was dropped where they "thought" the engine had fallen off, but this Saturday the buoy had moved due to weather or fishermen, the weeds are at least 6 feet from bed of lake, black engine, long weeds, not sure where???
Hi Rupert, The engine if found and then repaired, will no longer be under guarantee, I was surprised they agreed to pay out, I would have told club (if I was assessor) the engine would not have fallen off if it had been fitted correctly.

So the Insurers have effectively made this a total loss. That means there is a treasure trove in the bottom of your lake. A brand new 20hp 4stroke sells for @£2000+, OK it needs a de-dunk and a service, and perhaps some new electrics. All very simple stuff these days. Engines run on 12v, and it is a fresh water lake, so there wont be much damage done that cant be fixed by good dry out. (I'm not aware of much in the way of advanced computer management in this size of outboard.)

X may not mark the spot, but I am sure the driver has the location indelibly marked in his memory, and can relocate the search point. If Peter Goss can find Raphael Dinelli at twighlight in a hurricane in the Southern Ocean, using a Grid search pattern, it can't be too difficult to find an Outboard in a tranquil park lake, even if there are grindelows down there!

As far as the value of the recovered engine is concerned, who cares unless you plan to sell it. You would still have to pay £2K for something similar, and even if it hasn't got a wranty after its been fixed it should still run perfectly well, and a non franchise outboard mechanic will cost good deal less when you do need to service it. You will actually save money because you don't have to fork out for expensive servicing with a dealer, simply to maintain manufacturer warranty. (which is often pretty worthless anyway)

If you cant get a diver down its worth using a fisherman's punt and punting pole. Work your way around the area prodding at the bottom with a light metal "sounding pole" dibbing away along the bottom. When you hear a clang, you can throw a hook down and pull it up. (That is genuine "trolling") This is how they rescue people in Avalanches and how they used to find Bladder stones, in the good old days when Physicians were learned men who did nothing, and Surgeons were barbers, with the stripy pole. They would bleed you and cut for stone. (That is why a Probe is called a "sound")

Good luck

Michael,
The translation is a "Police woman on her horse", putting some "aitches" in "copper on her hoss", a Black country joke.
