Post by JB9 »

I have a 470 on long term loan, number 541, any idea how old 541 might be?

Thanks

I had 644 second hand in the late 80s. I love 470s. I bought 703 new in 1991. I will have a think about 541. It is probably early 80s. There was always a surge of sales pre olympics. Who is the builder?

It is a Parker, I am yet to sail it, maybe this weekend but having seen the forecast maybe not the best weekend to try something new.

K88, an early Parker, was vice free and pleasant to sail in any wind (OK 470 is perhaps undercanvassed, especialy by today's standards). So go for that sail this weekend!

K88 where art though now! The boat I most wished I had not sold.

K548 is on ebay dated at 1976, which is probably about right. There was also a surge in new boats prior to the 1988 games because the class was opened up to women.

Just back from a very good sail in the 470, very impressed in the F4 today though suspect the pace in light winds will not be great. Touched 9.4 kts according to my GPS (very non CVRDA sorry) with 1 capisize plus my crew fell out at one stage which was very funny.

Told You! When you are going really fast you wont be able to see your GPS because of the spray, Chris my crew used to tell me where to go as out on the wire he could see.

We sailed our Moth and Finn today, with a Pico for good measure. 20 Kt gusts - lots of fun. Until the riviet on the hounds gave way and Matt lost his mast overboard..... Nothing broken no one hurt.

The Finn took it all in its stride but kn****ered its helm in the process. It was not a piece of cake pulling it up the slipway afterwards!

I used to borrow 470s at Swanage sailing Club in the late 70s for a change from my Finn, and I'd agree with the suggested dates.

Glad someone else was out in their Finn today, at Staunton Harold the second race was a lot windier than 20 knots, only one Laser and myself finished. I won't be able to walk tomorrow and I'm sitting with a hot beanie now!

Hi

I made many 470 sails in the early 80's and would suggest 541 was built 83/84.

The 470 has a PY of 973. I do not think that the 1980 model that I am sailing will be anywhere near that but what would be appropriate?

New here and just browsing a few threads.

470 541 would have been built in 1981.

A well known National 12 champion had 540 (a Nautivela) new in late 1981. I remember sailing it at Calshot winter 81/82.
