CAN YOU NAME THIS DINGHY PLEASE

Post by mikewillis »

I Am trying to find out for some time what make of dinghy I own.

QUESTION could it be a Mark 1 Heron or Gull or a VAGABOND also THE BURNHAM and ESSEX Scow's all come close on dimensions but still not too sure or could it be one of the following !
.
To give you some hi,story of the dinghy as follows:-

I bought the dinghy from a Rochford in Essex Marine
It had been there for some time and was in a dirty condition at the back of a shed. On close inspection seemed to be in sound condition.

The owner said he was not sure what the make was.
I could not find a plate or name /number anywhere in side the boat or on the sails.

He also said he had intended to sail the dinghy but had not found the time he though all the parts are there so we agreed a sale.

BOAT MEASUREMENTS ARE AS FOLLOWS :-

L.O.A. = 11ft 5ins ( But not too sure about where this dim. should be taken say on a Heron so could be 11ft 3 or 4 )

A.W.L. = 11ft 3ins approx.

BEAM = 4ft 6ins

DRAFT = 3ft approx.

HULL GRP with wood trim with rowlocks for oars. The hull has two sealed buoyancy tanks forward and aft with two small
buoyancy pillow bags under seats.

( I have replaced all 3 hatches with new seal type )

The dinghy has two masts
The first Mast and boom are aluminium of straight section 17ft 6ins long approx. BURMUDER sails are in red/orange colour, no sail no
( I not to sure if this is the original as mast seems to have been cut down at the top for the boat using a centre main system )

The second mast and boom is a Mirror type gaff rig type with mirror sails the sheet is aft on to the transom.
(This has have been added at a later date using existing fixing hole points on the rear transom top deck flange.)

The gaff rig did not fit too well I have now sorted this out with shorter stay wires which allows adjustment.

The boat seems to have various wooden trim added over the years
I have now up dated some of these plus
I have added forward seating.

THE RUDDER and stock are well made of bulky and heavy wood material similar to a Heron or Gull the rudder and tiller are one with a lifting blade.
(This did not fit to well but with adjustment now working ok )

THE CENTRE BOARD
Pivoting type
Material heavy laminated not to sure what the board is made of !
( but not marine ply )
This had not been fitted in to the boat as bolt was wrong size and would not have sealed.
but after adjustment now to work and seal ok

I have asked around my sailing clubs if any one can identify the dinghy.

THE DINGHY COULD BE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING

1,HERON 11ft 3ins
( but I have not found a GRP version to access)

2.MERMAID 11ft
(Would seem to be too short, but I have not found a GRP version to access)

3.TORCH 13ft GRP
(Too long with side tanks)

4.WILDFLOWER GRP
( No information found to date )

5.WEEKDAY CROSS GRP
(Not sure about name and size of dinghy no information to date)

6.VAGABOND
( No GRP version found to date )

7.CHALLENGER 11ft in wood and GRP
( No GRP version found to date )

8. NORVAL 11ft GRP ( No information found to date )

9. SAILFISH 12 GRP ( Would seem to be too long at 12ft also beam to wide at 5ft 2 ins )

10.TODD 12ft TENDER SAILER
( Not sure about the size no information found to date )

As you know there are many versions of scow around the country with variations to suit location and class design

11. THE BURNHAM and ESSEX Scow's would seem to be close at 11ft 5ins
long ( But do not have a lot of information on these versions ) I have now be told by an expert my boat is not a scow.

12.TEPCO GRP dinghy's made from 8 to 12 ft long

13. GULL mark 1 GRP
( No information found to date I THINK NOT as length seems to be 11ft)

14.T.V. 50 by T.V.Times magazine 11ft 2 or 3
( No information found to date )

15. Could it be a French dinghy?

16. KENN 11 was this dinghy buit in GRP with a Pivoting type centre board
IF so do you know the following
The Overall Length=
Beam=
Draft=

Could you have a look at my photos.

Notice the unusual moulding line along the outside of the hull with the ZIG – ZAG line at the rear.

Also the V moulding line on the top of for-deck
It would need good base mould to produce this affect so would you think they must have sold a number boats to go to this design level could be limited addition.

The boat seems to have good lines and look similar to a heron or gull with a flattish bottom but
I am not to sure.

So far I have only had a test sail with the gaff rig the boat sailed well with the mirror sails in force 4 to 5 wind but the bailers leaked I should have checked before I put the boat on the water.
( now in the process of replacing.)

We have just retired and now sail a Wanderer at HCYC at Stansted Abbots Herts

This year we hope to sail HOTCH-POTCH dinghy down at the Maldon / Heybridge Basin Saltcote.S.C on the Blackwater FOR this summer just swallows and amazons
UPDATE this dinghy is now sailing on the blackwater.

Hello Mike and welcome.

I'm not so great on identities of this genre of dinghy, but I would point out that your pictures haven't posted.

If you look at the "Anouncements section in the Board index, you will see Niel has a thread titled "Image posting guide."

I am sure this will be helpful.

Also have you looked through the "Dinghy Database" link accessible through the home page (Click on the Flag and hover your cursor over the "Classes" heading to get there.

You've obviously been researching hard, Theres a few boats there that I've never heard of!

I suspect the big clue will be in the detail you mention in the moulding.

Look forward to the pictures!!

I'm sure a picture would be the way to go with this.

Hi Mike,

It works a bit better with a "u" in "forum" but you still need a login to access the photos.

I don't need another forum in my life but if you post them on here, we should collectively be able to come up with something.

The guy that set up the dinghy data originally used to have a picture of a wildflower under his unknowns page. A bit like a mirror - a scow bow but possibly a bit wider. Colin from SSC had one briefly. I would recognise it from a photo.

Click on post reply. Go to underneath the reply box. Click on browse. Find the photo you want. It has to be smaller than the size it says. Follow the instructions - something like Upload. It puts the file as an attachment. Post the posting as normal. The photo should come out. With luck and a following wind! Even I can do it, and I'm a bit crap at this sort of thing...

Hi Mike,

Perhaps your pictures are a bit big?

They need to be in jpeg format and preferably less than about 500kbytes or the system cant swallow them. Right click on the selected picture, and select "Properties" to find out the size of the picture file.

You can resize them by cropping unnessessary borders, or by using something like "Irfan view," or Microsoft office Picture Manager, or whatever picture editing system you have bundled on your PC. Just Right-click on the picture, select "Edit" and follow the steps.

I hope I am not teaching you to "suck eggs" :?

They can be in other formats, too, which can reduce the size. gif works, I think.
