Viking dinghy

Post by alan williams »

Hi guy just had a request for info. on a Viking dinghy can anyone help here are the details:
Hi, I have just aquired an old sailing dinghy. It is made from 3/8
mahogany clinker plank on an oak frame. It is just under 16 feet long
and is on a snipe trailer. The tiller and sails say viking 1. It has a
wooden mast with a "diamond" brace set up, lifting keel and rudder
with a lead weigh in it.The sails are cotton, white/beige and have a
stencil saying 1955. It also has a blue mainsail. I cant find much
info on this boat and wonder if you could help.Roger

James Bartlett - Racing Yachts and Dinghies - Macdonald & Co. 1960

The Viking listed in Bartlett is the Keelboat found in Northern Ireland but there is a mention of a 16 ft centreboard class..............see attachments........but no details!!!!

Yeah, it does, could it be that the bits of the Oulton Gull came from this boat too?

Jon who knows what Desmond Truman was up to with the Oulton Gull, I always though it was an American Design that was built in several centres and then sailed under various local names, sure as eggs is eggs Nick doesn't know!

Hi AG
We had a previous thread on the Oulton Gull and felt that it was a bad bastardisation of the North American One Design which was built in Plymouth as the Plymouth Dolphin. The Dolphin is a good boat very handy and fast in light airs.

I remember that thread, we had Gull no 5 as a family boat I would not call it bad in as much as it was pretty in sillouette but the rudder being a long way inboard meant its handling was well sensative!

Alan. Rupert. Try thinking...... STARCROSS VIKING.........??

The following is from Bartlett again............sorry no picture. Typed in to save download space!

"STARCROSS VIKING Roomy 15-footers, clinker built; one-design; 15ft; 5ft 6 in;4ft 3 in; 128 sq. ft.; 101. Builder: South Devon Boatbuilders; designer: O'Brien Kennedy. Sail marking shows letter "S" with number of boat below. Class information from: Hon. Sailing Sec., Mrs E. Crellin, Starcross Yacht Club, The Cottage, Shutterton Lane, The Warren, Dawlish, Devon."

The Club may be able to help but there is no mention of the Vikings on the website.

remember sailing in a viking at starcross in the early sixties. it was a "training "night and we were reassured it would not capsize .... oh yes it did and i remember it wallowing as it had no buoyancy. It reminded me of a big redwing and the coaming had a sweet curve to the mast. i think there were 2 at the club at the time
i have a good set of sails for a thai mk iv if anyone wants to pay postage
