In the north of France, the Boulogne area, at Equihen the most impoverished of fishermen families built their houses using old Flobart hulls turned upside down on top of a stone or wooden wall. From about 1850 until the second world war there was a tiny village known as "Le quartier des quilles-en-l'air" near Equihen beach.
