Uffa Fox Javelin

Post by Silverwood »

Hi
After owning one of these in the mid 1980s I am trying to find out if there are any current uk examples (or plans available). It was 14ft loa and not so extreme as an International 14!

Are you sure it was not a Peter Milne designed Javelin?

The Peter Milne one was much more a racing boat.

I know of three Javelins, the long Milne one, the US one and the antipodean development class (best!). But old PY lists seem to hint there was another Javelin class about in the late 50s or early 60s in the UK - I'e seen Javelin (Milne) listed. That might just be a hangover from when US classes appeared on the PY list though.

The one I had previously was the same sail Insignia as the US O'Day one...... I am wondering if a few were built in the uk before the liCense was sold to O DaY

I have read the story of this somewhere....maybe in one of the Uffa Fox books....or maybe in one of the yearbooks from 50-60s.

My memory was that they were a USA class, designed for O'Day by Uffa trying to match or grab some of Fairey's market coverage.

But couldn't be sure.

There is a little bit about it in Burrett's Dinghy Recognition, which reads as though it was designed purely for the States, but I can imagine a situation where prototypes at least existed in the UK.
