Post by Southern377 »

Does anyone know the source of the Dinghy Database picture of the Explorer pictured being sailed?

Found the answer myself...........1962 edition of The Dinghy Year Book............page 57. Jack Holt himself aboard.

According to the sail number on the sails with the boat this is "one and the same".

Next step is to find some intermediate history........1978 Thames Launch licence.......

How did she end up at Fishers Green.....?

The venue of the old photo could well be Wraysbury lake sailing club. Founded by Jack Holt at about that time and is where the Enterprise first took to the water. Apparently his wife wanted something calmer than a merlin to sail and that's where they sailed the Ent. The club sadly dissapeared a few years ago but there may be archives around. The photo on the dinghy base does look like it but then it may well look like Fisher's green too!

More pictures from 1961 Yachting World Magazines. Another shot of XX 6 and XX 1. Is it Wraysbury? Anyone recognise the other people in the pictures with Jack Holt.

Question.

Several references to the sails being red and the hull being blue. We have the original sails to confirm that they are red but the hull is currently (painted?) white but hope the original blue is there somewhere, or does anyone know what the original shade was?

Also now have a copy of the original construction plans which is proving of great assistance in the spar replacements; listing original Holt part numbers and the dimensions of the bespoke metalwork.
