Merlin Rocket 2112 History

Post by G.Brady »

Merlin Rocket 2112.

I have just purchased a beautiful Merlin Rocket, sail number 2112. The previous owner told me that the boat was built in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland in 1967. Anyone out there with any information?

THe Merlin Rocket Year Book shows your boat to have been built in 1968 by Chippendale Boats in Fareham Hampshire she is a Proctor mk 9b. I am pretty certain about the date as 2062 was certainle an early 1968 boat! I am unaware of any Irish Merlin Rocket activity at the time, although Jackie O'reilly and Bill Pigott from the IDRA 14 class did sail as guests at the 1969 Championships!

Thank you for that useful information. The previous owner had the boat for 4 years and never rigged it. She has no idea how the Kicker is rigged. It is an older style of mechanism with a metal triangular plate attached to the wires.... it has three points of attachment.... one to the mast, one to the boom, but I can't figure out where the third attachment goes. At thoughts on that would be also greatly appreciated.

I have contacted the MR Assoc.

Very many thanks.

It sounds like you've got a kicker lever there, perhaps a home-made one.
Best wishes

2112 "Decision" is certainly a 9b built for T D Nisbet a well known Merlin helm at Hamble River SC and Ranalagh. She won the SMYC Sussex Flagon Silver Tiller event in 1968.

quite probably ... they are deeply untrendy at present so can't easily find a picture to link ...

they've been deeply un trendy for 25 - 30 years ? in the early 90s it was all 16 :1 cascades for a lot of classes that permitted a relataviely free choice of kicker rigging
