In amongst our fleet is an oldish wooden streaker. It is a nice boat but has suffered from a poorly fitting top cover which means that some of the varnish is lifting away around the shroud plates and taking the veneer with it. Clearly I need to deal with this, but what is the best way without damaging this veneer? I think the veneer will have become very brittle and may well snap or break off when I try to sand/scrape the varnish.
Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Lifting veneer
If it is just the outer veneer of the ply.......
pull off anything that wants to come off easy.
cut back to good outer veneer
cut new bit of veneer
stick on
sand
varnish
admire
Just make sure the damage is to only the outer layer, otherwise you may have to think more about replacing the whole bit of ply.
Not sure what else to say...
you can sometimes stablise the inner core of ply with 'wood-hardener' 'thin epoxy SP300?', Blakes Woodseal or Bondamarine G4 well thinnned.
good luck
cheers
