triple stacker frame.

Post by Paul Rogers »

Can anyone advise what size and gauge square section I should specify for a custom bolt on triple stacker trailer frame to carry minisails?

flat or on edge ?
the total weight of 3 minisails is only approx 150kgs, so you would probably get away with inch section for uprights and 2"x1" section for horizontal sections, the RYA 6 boat trailer was very lightly built.

I think if you make it strong enough to climb on while you are loading the boats and tying them on you should be fine.

I had chance to pop in to look around the National Sailing Academy in Portland at the weekend. There were several parked up there which were 25 or 30mm section but couldn't tell the gauge as they had end caps fitted.

I know Minisails are supposed to be 50kg or less, but I think you'd have to allow for a fair amount more than that, especially if carrying Sprints...

I have no idea on all thickness, but suspect pretty much any 25mm section will be strong enough. Jim is right - if you can stand on it, it is strong enough.

For a Finn, use something that would carry the QE2... I think even Ed's old Minisprint is lighter... maybe.

On the basis (as Jim says) that the weight of the sailor when loading the boats is a bigger test than the boats themselves.....

....and this is therefore Finn sailors we are thinking about here....

....mmmmm... without using an algorithm based on pork pies, pints of Guinness and plum puddings.

I would start with very thick and then double it.

I have been asked to modifiy our club rib trailer to carry cadets above it, for when they visit the big events and need there own saftey boat. after looking around at what is commercialy available and how they do it, I have decided to use 40mm box for the upper frame to be safe !. HTH.

No need to sell the Finns - just go to the back of the boat park and dig out the Minisail that is bound to be in the bushes!
