Jollyboat trailer

Post by jlawler »

Hi,
I own a Jollyboat (J66) and I am trying to sort out a trailer for it. Can anybody tell me the distance of the axle from the stem of the boat on their trailers i.e. so it puts a moderate weight on the towbar. Also where should the cradle on the launching trolley be positioned.

I don't have a handy way of working out the centre of balance as its in a shed at the moment.

Thanks.

Justin.

Not easily...till I go up to the lake next, and to be honest, mine isn't right anyway, but will try and give you some figures if I can in a day or two.

Any boat I tend to half way plus six inches. Not really occurred to me to worry about centres of anything.

I think that way is good enough and is pretty much what I do...

having said that, I reckon the bow of a jollyboat is quite a bit heavier than the stern....

still the issue with the Jollyboat is that it is quite scary having the best part of 9ft of dinghy apparently unsupported.

All in all 'half plus 6in' seems like a good estimate.

If you can, get one with the cradle set behind the axle like the Mersea ones.

This means the boat is supported further back than the balance point.

Hi Justin,

I am using a Wayfarer trolley on a combi trailer. The trolley is fine but the trailer axle is a bit too far forward.

I will measure the trolley tonight and let you know, it will give you an idea for the trailer length.

Hi Justin, my trolley is 3200mm from wheel centre (main support) to front of trolley so a bit longer would probably be better, say 3400 to 3600mm.

You need to make the trailer wheels spaced widely enough to get the trolley wheels inside the trailer wheels otherwise the boat/trolley will sit too far back on the trailer unless you take the trolley wheels off.

So the trailer would need to be say at least 3400mm from wheel centre to mast support possibly longer to suit the trolley.

Also, don't make the trolley too long as it will be a pig to pull around with the boat on unless you have a good pivoting jockey wheel.

If you don't have a trolley I'm pretty sure a wayfarer trolley would do, they come up on ebay occasionally.

Hope this helps, Chris

Thanks for all the information.
I am going to use my former Finn Trailer (built like a tank to take two Finns) and have a couple of feet added to bring the axle further back.
I was very unsure because of the weight of the centre board (its about 75lbs isn't it).

Thanks again.

Most Fairey plates were 65lb, but I think there may of been a few at 85lb or heavier.
