Well after making progress have now taken a couple of steps back!
Found that some of the (very thick) varnish around the mast step area is flaking off - fortunately the wood under these bits seems good and hard. Plan is to sand back and re varnish using a trad varnish as I'm not sure what the current stuff is so this seems less likely to have any strange reactions! I believe the boat has also been expoxied...
There is also one very small area (about 30mm x 7mm) under the plastic plate the mast sits on where the varnish appears to have been scraped away and the wood is slightly soft (easy to push a thin, sharp, small screw driver into a bit), I'm going to try to remove the soft stuff (awkward to do) then fill with glue and a little bit of ply off cut before re varnishing.
Any thoughts/suggestions on these plans welcome!
Thanks
Keith

Re: Finn mast step
This shows the scrape where the wood has gone soft.
Shame this area can't drain when the boat is outside (not often!), might have to experiment with taping a plastic bag round the mast!
