SAILS FOR POIROT!!

Post by NaomiTV »

So, looks like we have found a couple of potential boats (thanks, guys!) but sails are proving to be a problem.

Anyone know any sailmakers that could make up some cotton sails for us?

Thanks,

Naomi

I don't know of any one who would know how to make dinghy cotton sails. It will be interesting to know if you do find someone. (expect to pay serious money I would think).
What sort of boat are you usingand what size? I have various cotton sails including an unused one for a 14ft dinghy. There are no class symbols or numbers on and I don't know exactly what it is from. Do you have some measurements?

No I had the only cottons and they were over 60years old!. Squirrel had very early terrylene, nicely cleaned and they do like cotton but are whiter. small panels and coloured stiching is how they were made.

Naomi,
I have sent you an e-mail, But Tatsey and Lapthorne at Cowes still have the skills and cloth to do it, (Provided some suitable off cuts for a friends sails as patches) so possibly do Jeckells at Wroxham, Mike MacNamara could do an erzatz cotton suit in cream dacron with narrow panels if only he can persuaded to leave his brand X sign off!
Good luck you do not have much time!

The sails would be for either a Brightlingsea One Design, don't know the size of the sails yet but it's an 18' boat with a 30' mast.

Other alternative is a 14' clinker (bermuda rigged).

I think that your 30' mast boat will be difficult and expensive to get cotton sails for. Of course the sails don't have to go to the top of the mast!!!!!!! The 14ft boat would stand a better chance as there may ba a few cotton sails which may fit.

Several pictures of BODs here in our gallery.

at 624kg plus crew weight you don't argue with them at the mark!

There's a few problems arising with the BOD, (when I thought I had it sorted!)...

Anyone know of anyone with white cotton sails that would fit this boat??

Mainsail is 18ft by 8ft
Jib sail is 5ft 4'' by 12ft

This boat has some similarities to mine but is all shipshape.Looks a beauty!

Assuming it's Bermudan I have a set of Circa 1950 cotton sails for an International 14. (With i14 insignia and number,) For close up "in the boat" shots I'm sure they might do. There may be other similar sets out there.

For sailing shots you may find soft terylene is a safer option. Only problem would be matching the seam pattern.

I'll try and get a photo to you.

Try jameslawrencesailmakers.com. They make trad sails for trad boats and jolly nice they are. The problem might be sourcing lighter grades of cloth if you want cotton. They may have some old sails that could be cut to fit. They could use a light cotton colour dacron. Have a look and give them a call.

Hi Naomi,

On receiving your request I imediatllty forwarded it on to my Norfolk Broads friends. Only one response I'm affriad, but it may yeild hope in your search for a sail.... Or just use the sailmakers boat..... copy of the response below---

Good morning,

I have a 14' clinker built dinghy that is in excellent condition and has wooden mast and traditional fittings etc.

If you want to see a picture of the boat if you log onto http://www.jeckells.co.uk and watch the end of "Jeckells the Movie" you will see the boat. Sail number 11.

Let me know if you are interested.

This is an used cotton sail made in 1964 Cream Egypian cotton with white stitching hemptype ropes.
Luff is 18ft, foot 9ft 3" two plastic sliders with two feet of the bottom of the luff. Proabably not needed and could be removed.
No number or insignia, just says 14ft dinghy in small writing.
(Any suggestions as what this might be off I would like to know)

If this is suitable I could loan it
