Most Apt class name
Most Apt class name
Thinking of the Dart on the Incons thread made me wonder about class names and their aptness, or otherwise, to the boat they belong to. The Dart, with those skegged hulls and bursts of speed, would seem to fit the boat exactly. The International Moth has managed to grow into its name, sprouting wings and then flying.
Any others?
Any others?

I thought I could sail until I got the Hornet. They certainly have a habit of tipping the unwary in and one Hornet NC who sails an FD has said the FD is like an armchair after the Hornet. A sting in the tail perhaps.

Add the GP a more general purpose boat you could not find. Good racing but great for swallows and amazon adventures with the youngsters.

Hornet has a sting in the tail if you don't gybe it flat. Catapult made out of rubber. GP does what it says on the tin. Miracle Not. Spearhead looks like a spearhead from above. I can confirm that the FD is very stable as well.

Re: Most Apt class name
Perhaps its a Miracle that the class is still going and they are still being made (4000+). A slight resurgence in recent years?

Did the Flying Dutchman used to have the slogan "No FD, no comment" for am I imagining that?

We have a Turtle at our club sailed by a guy who seems to want to match the class name to its position in the water!! He is lucky to have a mast shorter than our water depth!!

Re: Most Apt class name
I gather Merlins were originally going to be called Wizard. I had always assumed that because ex-RAF people were strongly involved in the early days that the name Merlin was from the Spitfire engine but that is incorrect I believe.
Any way Merlins surely have a touch of magic.

Wildcat. Rudder and centreboard were too close together and from talking to people who sailed them they were an absolute bastard to sail in any strong wind. Wayfarer again does what it says on the can. Scholar dinghy sailed in USA at several colleges.

Well.....surely the most in-apt has to be Jollyboat!
Always thought they should of followed through with the tradition of using their aeroplane names and called the class, the Barracuda.

A 'jolly' is (was) slang for a Royal Marine.
Mirror - certainly has the best named owners club magazine (Reflections).
Topper - designed to go on a simple roof rack (thats why the foredeck and stern deck are proud of the side decks).
Finn - the best boat for Finnish folk to sail in? Nope - fat-ish maybe!!!
International Canoe - its a canoe, and its....
420, 470, and the others - 505 even - how accurately named can you get?
