How they used to sail at Shoreham

Post by pierre »

You all may have seen this clip before
but, some old bits of timber and cotton
seen here splashing around Shoreham,
probably when I was a very young lad.....
No, just checked, I wasn't even born...it was taken in 1953

I always lurk Rog.

My Osprey was built by Westerly in 1973 I am
told, so I think I'm OK there.....

As a little aside... purely serendipity.. but I found
myself on the train with our Club commodore going up
to London Bridge last week... he is a laser and RS200 sailor.. but confessed
to perhaps buying an Osprey as well soon... because it looks
really good on the water.
As he has only ever seen me sailing an Osprey at Weirwood,
I had to agree with him. :D

She won't be quite that old. The MkIII version was approved by the CA in 1973 at the AGM held at the Mumbles nationals. I was there aged 22 in 823 which I'd bought hull-only as an insurance right-off (long story there!); our 1st time sailing on the sea and our 1st nationals. By 1973, sail number had reached the high 900's. They skipped a few and started again at 1000 for the MkIIs. Your boat will have been built in the late 70s.
Best wishes

1137 would be 1976. There is a useful list on the Osprey website....

They lied to me !!!!!
Must dig out the emails I printed off.
There was some useful info regarding who
the original owner was etc etc... from a guy
who had sailed with him in it. This cam via the
Osprey peeps.

Anyhow, it's not in the first flush of youth
and definitely has never won anything that
I am aware of, but I enjoy having it anyway,
and so do my sons who are all well over
6ft so definitely the right transport for two
or three of us at a time :)

Hoping that there will be a fair few big boats (and blokes, by the sound of it!) at BB - plenty of time to work on the Ospreys and Hornets and get fleets out!
