Sail Area?

Post by JB9 »

The database states that the sail area on the Jollyboat is 13.9 sq m whilst the Hornet is 15 sq m. Surely that cannot be right?

In old books, I have the JB as 14.88 (160 sqft) and the Hornet as 12.91 (139), but the Hornet spinnaker less than 1/2 the size. It may also be that the full jib overlap isn't measured in the JB.

1989 "popular sailing dinghies" gives the hornet as 140sq ft/13.02sq m, and the same again for the spinnaker. 1997 "dinghy & dayboat directory" gives 161sq ft/ 15sqm for main and jib with 132 sq ft/12.3 sq m for spinnaker. Jollyboat isn't in either.

Burrett (1974) offers:
Hornet 11.24sqm and with genoa 12.91sqm, spinny 7.9sqm;
Jollyboat 14.86sqm, spinny 18.58sqm

My copy of Dinghy & Dayboat Directory also gives the Hornet as 15sqm with a 12.3sqm spinny so I expect both changed the rules over the years but it is shades of the ebay tape measure :-)

I've always had the impression that the ebay tape measure is an instrument of precision compared to the methods used to estimate sail area in the 60s and 70s.
