I had exactly the same answers as Rupert, except perhaps the Forth and Clyde canal, which I'm not sure is open at the moment.

Did the GWR terminate on the Severn, then? Or maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree completely!

I guess the Falkirk wheel on the Forth & Clyde canal which makes it passable again from Glasgow to Edinburgh.
Though you don't actually need to use the wheel to go on through the lower part of Falkirk to join the Carron by the Kelpies and out to the Forth near Grangemouth.

The GWR found a way to shorten the sea route to the Atlantic. This terminus was open in 1856 and closed to passengers in 1964.
