Great weekend, 17 boats on Sunday, we were treated to a master class again by David but Mark and I tried very hard to keep up ( thanks for sails Mark, at least there was a bit of shape in them compared to the 45 year old ones I was using on Sat)
The weather was kind with light North westerly wind and sunshine for the annual CVRDA weekend hosted by Clywedog Sailing Club over this weekend. unlike last year when racing was abandoned due to the gales. The racing started on Sat afternoon with a Long Distance race down to the Staylittle end of the Lake and then a few laps in the main body of the lake. This gave the 14 entrants chance to fine tune there boats for the serious racing on Sunday. The fleet was led back into the main lake by two of the three-boat entry from the Pegasus Class (designed by Uffa Fox in the early 60’s) with the chasing pack bunched together some way behind. Pegasus 135 helmed by Jane Jones & crew Mark just beat of the challenge of David Rollinson & Owain Hughes in Pegasus 194 who had missed a mark earlier and left themselves too much to do though the gap was only 30seconds at the finish. In third place was Alan Price in OK 1211.
There was a hog roast on Saturday evening provided by a local butcher and salads and sweets from the ladies at Clywedog which was enjoyed members of the Old Gaffers association who were also having an away weekend with 15 traditional gaff rigged boats and there enthusiastic owners, along with the CVRDA contingent. A sing along was enjoyed along with a few pints of real ale after supper which ensured a few sore heads the following day.
Sunday saw 17 boats come to the line for the first of three races and David Rollinson & Owain Hughes in Pegasus 194 soon built an unassailable lead and were never challenged. Alan Price in the OK 1211 sailed a perfect race to come in second and John Gardiner in the Graduate 2093 just squeezed into 3rd from the other two Pegasus by a few seconds on corrected time.
Race two saw Rollinson & Hughes complete there Master class with a flawless performance to gain there 2nd straight win, with Gardiner in the Graduate 2093 taking 2nd place and Keith Rollinson & Andrew Watson in another Pegasus (no number as this boat was lying unused for 25yrs till 3mths ago and has been re fitted with original rig/sails) in third place.
With a number of boats on equal points race 3 was going give a edge to the days racing and with Rollinson & Hughes already assured of 1st place by virtue of their two straight wind they opted to not start race 3 and count that as the discard. The race officer set a windward leg up the narrows with a straight run back into the lake and a tricky course via the wind shadow created by the steep sides at Clywedog. Rollinson and Watson in the Pegasus broke through on lap one from the Hornet 140 (built in 1953 and one of only a few left sailing) of Roger & Hugh Devereux from Shearwater Sailing Club. Mark Jones and Daughter in Pegasus 135 managed to get through Rollinson and Watson and hang on to the end and Duncan Spencer-Smith came past the hornet to take 3rd.
The overall results were: 1st Place David Rollinson & Owain Hughes Pegasus 194
2nd Place John Gardiner Graduate 2093
3rd Place Keith Rollinson & Andrew Watson Pegasus
4th Place Mark/ Jane Jones and crews Pegasus 135
