Garry,

I do not think this is a GP! The bow and the sheerline are all wrong (at least to my eyes)

Not sure what it IS though!

Could be a lazy E. Not quite the right length but the "E" insignia might account for any confusion.

Nigel,

Not sure what happened there. Earlier today I posted a reply to you but it has gone walkabout! I'm sure that this is something I did rather than the site, grrr, I wish I was betterer at these things.

Anyway, the point of my mail was to say 'sorry but no'.

Think of the Lazy E as nothing more than a bigger squashed enterbox! By now Jack Holts designs had settled on the twin chine approach. This is far more like a GP, in the fact that it is a boxier, single chine hull.

With that raised stem line and almost exaggerated rocker, I'm not sure what it is. But what it ain't is an Ent, nor a GP, of that I'm sure!

Over to the next contributor for another stab at this!!

Anyone got a picture of a Mk1 Mermaid 14? I have a picture of a Mk2 which is hard chine, but is to quote " a lighter version.....in stitch and glue with modified side tanks and foredeck..."

Regards,
Alan.

Hi David,

I was only going off a dodgy line drawing in Burret and a guess about the "E" so am not suprised to be off target. The only other thing I can think of that comes close is a Marine Tutor but I have not seen one of those in the flesh either :).

What would we do without eBay to set us these puzzles? :)

I would take a stab at this being an early Graduate which has been measured with the usual ebay tape!

Sorry guys bu I did some homework on this last night and would suggest that the best bet is a very, very early Grad......

Not a GP in a month of non sailing sundays!

As a Grad sailor I tend to agree with Jonathon and David, the angles from the side decks looks right and the top of the stern tank apears to be concave. However, I can't remember seeing a Grad with a breakwater on the foredeck, though I'm sure someone can correct me, and the horse is much higher than anything I've seen.

Definitely not an Ent; not double-chined and sails are the wrong colour.

Martin,

I've pictures of very early Grads that have both the breakwater and a raised transom horse. Case rests for the Grad believers

Thanks for that David. There is a very old Grad next to mine in the dinghy park and I've never seen it with the cover off. Next weekend I may just have to take a peek.

Martin,

If you do..... take a digital camera and just sneak a few snaps for the 'record'!

You never know when someone will find another ebay secret that needs unpicking!

and I'd like the copies too!!!

And the answer is........

Graduate - sail number 580.

Congratulations to those who got it right (Jonathan, David & Martin) and commiserations to the rest of us :).

David, if you want me to forward the photos, let me know where to send them.
