I understand there was a reasonable sized fleet in the Orkneys at one stage.....

There is a mention in the Merlin Rocket Book.

Wasn't there a Rocket test range up there (the whoosh, whizz, bang variety?)

I think you are thinking of the Hebrides. My brother was in the artillery and was posted to Benbecula as the Range Major's Driver. Which sounded a great posting.

[naval historian hat]The Orkneys are the location of the Roylal Navy's wartime anchorage of Scapa Flow, and final resting place of HMS Royal Oak and several hundred of her ship's company. [/naval historian hat]

Whoops... am I straying into Banter territory? Sorry

Plenty of Snipes up there now, I believe, mostly from Budworth when they get a bit old and tatty.

Prospective owners need to check with Martin as advertised as 408 "Sprig of Shillelagh" a Holt Riant on MORA site. Sprig was owned by Pat Blake and won the Vintage Wing in 1997, 2002, 2003 & 2004. I do not think it is 207!
