Opportunity Knocks, End of season sale??

Post by Michael Brigg »

Poor Ed,

Like me, and many others of us, lamenting a lack of the needful, at a time when the intrnet seem awash with Candy...

Currently I've seen, from this site...

Rannoch (Niel's vintage Uffa fox IC,)
http://www.apolloduck.com/advert.phtml?id=267946

a Classic era i14
https://plus.google.com/photos/10153813 ... psrc=pwrd1

A Fairey Duckling... always wanted one, but they tend to stay with families as neglected childhood memories, like well chewed teddies.

A "Tiger Moth," (the one that Ed has lusted after for years... )

...And this lovely Jollyboat J26, fully restoed and original, which was on view at Bosham just recently...

...and on ebay, there is a glut that has my "watch list" overflowing, sadly mostly suffixed by "ENDED" :( :(

There is a nice looking Streaker...would make for variety against those OK's, Solo's, Moths, Finns and Minisailers!

...a tidy classic Cadet for the juniors
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261104252913? ... 1438.l2649

That Classic Finn with a lovely "full set" wooden mast and boom,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221131405776? ... 1423.l2649

Not my thing but this 420 looks all original
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251159018147? ... 1423.l2649

A very nice osprey. We dont't seem to see these much, perhaps the main fleets are geographically rather distant from the CVRDA hub, or they remain competitive within the main fleet and have less need of a racing home.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160888647801? ... 1423.l2649

Not sailing, but essential for that evolving collection, an adequate sized means of transport in good roadworthy condition.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261103559676? ... 1438.l2649

Just to cap it all, on the non sailing scene, a few little gems,...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230856403782? ... 1438.l2649

and to draw another anguished sigh from Ed...

the streaker is nice isn't it, and would solve my no Holt boat dilemma, but I am full of broken boats and a fair few stone too heavy for it. Her off the telly should never been allowed to sell hers. I also think the 420 looks cool. The 14s at Bosham have made getting mine on the water a real priority, as ever storage and winter work space are the issues. Plus of course what to do with the kezzer. It was meant to be a boat for nik to learn to crew in, but unfortunately we both really enjoyed our sail in it and have developed a fondness for it. I think we're reanming it 'Rocky' pshaw to bad luck, it surely can't get worse for it?

The older wooden Ospreys are indeed still competitive today. 1085 (built in 1975) won the Inlands last year. Part of me still has a hankering after another Osprey. But, lack of cash aside, I don't have anywhere to store, no crew and no spare time to sail it. But that aside, if I did have another Osprey I can get top notch fleet racing against the current national champion just a few miles from here so Id hardly have any incentive to go handicap racing against the CVRDA. The problem with a boat like the one you've linked to is that it needs a new trailer and trolley so that's close to another grand (we'll ignore the £1500 for a new suit of sails). It probably needs a new cover too. It all adds up and quickly reaches a point where there's well sorted MkIIIs going for around the same price.
Best wishes

Of course, the Streaker wasn't designed until 1975, so whilst being a lovely boat, would need to go and play with other Streakers...

Quite a list, there, Michael - the Duckling appeals, but other than that, think I'm happy with what I have! Has to be a first time for everything, and I'm sure it won't last...

That Streaker does look enticing. If sailed well it would give the Solos and L****s a run for their money at Shearwater.

BUT could I sail one well enough?

Besides I haven't time for a wooden boat...

Well maybe just a small bid :)

Where would I keep a second boat?

Ought to discuss with the financial adviser first :(

Great boats Streakers, excellent fun, can be a bit tricky downwind and get a bit of rock and roll on. I had a couple of Solos, when I still owned a sailable Streaker, (have owned 3)and preferred it in many ways. Despite the Solos being with stiff proctor masts to better handle my weight-I have all the bits for a Streaker, should you go ahead and need any spares.

Anyway hopefully my attention will be on the Minisail Sprite next year.
