Merlin Rocket - project or race ready

Post by slimtim »

First post but having looked at the forum for a number of months, I think I am in a place where someone may be able to help.

Based in Kingston-upon-Thames, I am keen to get on the river (have been surveying clubs) in an older style Merlin Rocket; my 10 year old son is just about big enough to crew and my wife is happy to be back up in case!

I am therefore looking for either a project or a race ready boat.

In line with conventional wisdom I am looking for a dinghy with a narrower rather than broader beam and with good tacking manners.

My inclination is to go for a boat that is race ready (time, facilities and skills limit my ability to take on a rebuild) and I'd also be interested to talk to anyone who might be about to embark on a project themselves but would want to sell the boat once the job is done - looking at the forum it looks like one or two members are stocking up on winter projects!

I will also be posting 'wanted' adverts in the clubs along the river.

Hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Tim

I have MR 3521, an Ovington built all-GRP NSM2, they are supposedly fairly good river boats.

She is down to weight, sound and functional but a little scruffy, and some tinkering is needed to get the rig working as the mast I originally had with her was bent beyond repair, I have sourced a replacement which is in good condition and included with the boat, but the two currently haven't met :)

It has been my intention to get her fully assembled, tidied up and properly advertised in the spring. This is long overdue as I have been rebuilding a complete basket case of a house, and have been struggling to find time to do much boat-related. So if this is possibly of interest I would be very happy to discuss a favourable 'as-is' price. You're welcome to send me a message if this sounds like it might be of interest.

Simon.
