You can have my 1962 Europa Moth for free!!! But you will have to collect it from Switzerland! However it is certainly car-toppable.

Re: Single hander preferably car topable
The Minisail is the perfect car topable cvrda boat, as it is narrow enough not to overhang the edges. A solo would need a crane to get it on the roof...and the OK a crane and a sumo wrestler...ducks for cover...

Re: Single hander preferably car topable
Oh Dear, looks like we better weigh someones Solo if it is that light
The OK is only 2kgs heavier at 72kg and they are allowed to include dry control lines.
Hmmm, methinks a plot here!

This one has been on a few times. He has reduced the start price, now, but it still seems more like a finishing price, which is OK if there is only 1 bid...

Re: Single hander preferably car topable
Greg,
It's a good question to ask actually - for it highlights on of dinghy developments lesser know situations.
If one was unbendingly firm on the 1965 cut off point then the choice of singlehanders would be limited indeed - for the simple fact is that at that point the number of designs was very limited. Solo and OK you've identified... then there are the Far Northern Nordic Ice breakers - but you've got/had one of those...... so a Minisail, or better still, a minisail sport, complete with sliding seat, would be great. Other considerations....a Piccolo, or even a Bonito if you could find one.
THen again - how about a ToY? More of a real boat that the others - but is it car toppable?
I'm sure that others will have views on this

Re: Single hander preferably car topable
You could probebly put a ToY on the roof of a Volvo estate, but it is a big, heavy boat and you would need some serious roof bars and strong helpers! Don't forget the International Moth and British Moth in your list of pre 65 single handers!

Rupert..............
I did try to forget them..... then you went and reminded me.
Looks like you will, after all, be immortalised in print (at least your white knuckles will be)

Re: Single hander preferably car topable
The ToY is OK but not the greatest boat to sail, and they do have a habit of exploding into pieces. As for Singlehanders there's always the IC - the only real boat with a sliding seat, and one with shed loads of history - you can roofrack an IC but you would need a long car.......davidh wrote:Greg,

Other singlehanders - the Mark but also the Mirror and 420 as both can be sailed in singlehanded mode (and the Firefly and Tideway can be sailed singlehanded - but do not attempt to roofrack a Tideway).
There's always the Optimist (would love to see Greg in one), the Seabat, Beechcomber and numerous Percy Blandford designs
Re: Single hander preferably car topable
I know of a wooden Beachcomber going for less than £1000 .
Re: Single hander preferably car topable
I am not sure the Beachcomber is "easily" car toppable.
How about a Mirror? There is a dedicated singlehander following and if you want to take a friend out you can, cheap too. I sail mine alone sometimes but have yet to try the spinnaker on my own. Hoisting would be fine, its attaching the pole that could be tricky.
