SiBr bolts

Post by kfz »

Anyone have a source for si br bolts/nuts and washers....

Like to through bolt my rudder pintles as the transom is only 7/8ths thick.

Or am I being a bit anal, use stainless [spit] for the sake of safety.

They are available.

Some classic chandlers have them at ridiculous prices. Robbins either has them, or can get them in.....again at a price.

Only online place I know is Classic Marine:

Are you being anal?

most probably.....but if you decide to go down the stainless route and you are going to worry about it.....then make sure you get the best marine grade, because most of the stuff online is not.

Does that worry me? Well no, to be honest not, but I have seen some cheap stainless screws suffering from rot, so I am not saying it doesn't happen.

Of course. Thanks Ed.

Ive been fairly sensible. Where the screw cant be seen, either out the way or just hidden then Ive used Stainless, My understanding is that theres basically 2 grades 316 (or A4) which is marine rated and 31? (or A2) which is just freshwater. To be honest stainless is so easytoget I normally just give the trade to my local Chandler. Where the fastener is on show and major structural (rigging, steering etc) ive used SiBr. Where just minor structural and on show. Then (common old 70/30) Brass.

The Rudder pintles being fairly structural and on show then....

Of course, bolting your rudder pintles stops screws pulling out, but when the rudder hits bottom nice and hard, where is your next weak point? Best to make sure it isn't the whole transom...

I've never had any trouble from stainless bolts of any grade, but have had stainless screws rust.

Not tried them but motorbike shops do stainless might be worth a try. We have a very helpful place in Frome where you can buy just one screw if you wish. When I remember the name i will post it. Not sure if the do mail order.

These guys are just down the road from me.
http://www.pts-uk.com/
I used to feel a bit sheepish going up to the counter
and asking for half a dozen of such and such, when
they plainly ship tons of fixings all over the UK.
But they are amazingly helpful and get me my stuff
and I've never paid more than a couple of quid.
Think they do stuff online as well.

I think I have bought online from pts-uk....but there are lots of others, some of which are very good prices.

Also used Seaware. Doesn't Trago Mills stock there stuff???

Problem with motorcycle stainless is that most of it is A2.....which as Roger says is pretty much the same in most cases, but like Rupert, I have had screws rust in seawater.

But you know.....the more I think about it....the more I think Ruperts point is really worth considering. I have ripped the transom out of a Merlin with a bolted pintle at Clevedon on the slipway. It made a right mess and I remember thinking that it wouldn't of happened on a Fairey boat as for one thing it is screwed on and secondly it would self destruct before the transom came off.

I would really consider screws. The advantage is that if you find they are getting loose, you can always put in the bolts later?

cheers

Thumbs down for Seaware.

Not only are the stainless screws not the imperial sizes I ordeedr but metric (rounded down to nearest size), not what I asked for.

The SiBr screws are at least the correct size, but the slots are so thin Ive had to take a grinder to screwdriver to get it to fit. In fact ive had to stop work just now to avoid blood on the work from my holed thumb after a nice metal splinter. great!

Before posting this ive given them oppertunity to rectify the problem to no avail, despite the multitude of bot generated emails in my inbox, inviting a reply

Rubbish, cheap and Sh*te and I wont be using them again.

sorry to hear that.

Although in a way.....it maybe does not surprise me, being as they are sold at Trago, they are likely to be urrrr, how shall I say it....made to a price.
