Drysuits

Post by Max McCarthy »

After sailing (for the first time!) through the winter, last year, I have decided it is time to get a drysuit.

However before I make a purchase, I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations? I am currently interested in a crewsaver cirrus drysuit, so does anyone have any experiance of this one?

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Max

Max, I hardlyuse my dry suit but I have had excellent after sales service from typhoon who replaced one after it started leaking and replaced the boots on the new one after they started leaking. Not sure whether its a reflection on the original quality but they like to look after their customers.

I have a Typhoon as well. Put to good use at a certain Baltic Wharf event. Would recommend one.

I have a typhoon; very pleased and reasonable price. I rarely wear my wetsuit now, because in warmer weather the dry suit breathes and is more comfortable. They come with latex seals which are the most comfortable but can be prone to tearing or glideskin which is like fabric wetsuit material which can allow water to seep in but is more comfortable and probably tougher. You can sail in all conditions if you wear warm stuff underneath. I regularly turn up in jeans and shirt and don't change, stick the suit on, sail or powerboat all day, take the suit off and go straight home.

My suit is going for seal replacement by typhoon which for neck, wrists and both feet is about £100-120.

Thanks for the tip neil and billytwiglet

But unfortunately, I think I will have to ignore all of your great advice, because I have discovered my club do a 50% discount on the Gul stuff, so I think I will go with a Gul drysuit (of some sort),

Thanks anyway,

How did your club negotiate that? Has someone taken on a franchise or bought a stock or something? WLTK

Hi
I was talking to a kayaking friend about dry suits he said that most kayaker that he knows use a Typhoon dry suit made by Lomo watersports,it's priced at £225. Some of his friends use their more expensive one made for kayakers which includes a comfort zip for £300 which has special features for spraydecks. He showed me his Lomo Typhoon suit and its very well made out of quality materials. It has seal covers a brass front zip and cordura reanforcement to the arms, legs knees and seat. Seems like a bargin to me.
I'll proberbly replace my Crewsaver with one of these when it wears out.
Cheers Al

Typhoon max B with the goretext feet. I'm instructing powerboating nearly every day this week, wouldn't be without it. Her indoors bought a Gul last winter and hates it. Hard to get in and out of, not comfy to wear.

Personally, I think they are great for safety boat duty but not so for performance sailing where you move around a great deal (not me, clearly!). The Neil Pryde Elite Firewire Matrix kit is excellent as an alternative and offers more flexibility than a drysuit.
