Masthead sheave box wanted
Masthead sheave box wanted
I'm looking for a masthead sheave & sheave box for an early ally Proctor mast on a '59 Merlin with the halyard running in the luff groove.
The original is Tufnol but material is not so important.
It is a single sheave.
The box is 15mm wide, 47mm tall and has a depth (front to back) of 29 mm
It is held in the widened luff groove by two (3/4mm) ally pins (which I also need) their centres are 38mm apart.
Difficult to tell what the original sheave measured, not a lot left but it is around 8mm wide with a diameter of approx 22mm
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction...and how do you spell sheave?
Thanks
Michael

Micheal,
Sorry to hear about the sheave breaking up.
It would all have been imperial measurements so it might be best to quote the measurements as such, if looking for a period replacement. Or are you happy with something that just works?
Can you just replace the sheave itself?

Re: Masthead sheave box wanted
Well after 55 years the sheave itself looked more like a squashed bagel (one lip missing completely) and I guess the halyard had been jamming against the side of the box it sits in as the pressure came on. It did not run well at all. Tufnol. I should have checked it before I put the mast up but was concentrating on the other end!
The box sits in the widened luff groove and is pinned in place by a couple of ali pins.
Rolled the boat and took it out yesterday. Spent a happy hour in the garage with epoxy, a small s/s block, bits of a clevis pin and a glass of wine.
Have just re-coated with epoxy to further strengthen the box and am quite pleased with my creation (although it doesn't look too 'great').
Will put it back together in a day or so and we'll see. If it works I obviously won't be needing a replacement.

Tesco Australian Red wine box (oh yes, you know the one).
I use it for dissolving excess epoxy!

Re: Masthead sheave box wanted
is this what you need?
It off a decent but redundant merlin mast but if no one wants a mast then the sheave is yours.
I might check with Roger too as he has a really (s)crappy mast I gave him which didn't work and I think it has the same fitting. Note that this one is fixed with self tapper so that makes it easier. I think the measurements match.

Chris,
Many thanks. This indeed does look like what I want (if the size is right) but let's just see if my epoxy masterpiece works before you strip that one off what sounds like a perfectly good mast that someone might need in the future.
Yours, being an alloy box, looks much newer but then that mast is anodised too, which 950's isn't.
(for that one I claim an award for one of the worst sentences in English...ever!)
Thanks again, will let you know how I get on.

The quality of the english is not IMHO the primary problem there right now...Rupert wrote:You don't frequent the Y&Y forum, then...

I would blame the Aussie wine personally . (Since it's our WFU world cup next year!! )Michael4 wrote:Chris,

Re: Masthead sheave box wanted
All sorted. The epoxy/Tufnol/stainless steel creation is in place and appears to function well. I have used 'monel' split pins to secure it since I couldn't find any aluminium pins. I am assuming that 'monel' is closer to aluminium than stainless...
Chris,
Thanks for your help. If this fails I will be in touch!
