National Rally 2016 - Hunts SC

Post by Nessa »

I'm pleased to say Hunts will once again be hosting the Nationals, over the August Bank Holiday weekend. As previously there will be free camping on site, and on Sunday we will be combining with the club's first Family Regatta Day, where two members of the same family race in the same boat. Other forms of entertainment will also be provided!

The Vintage Merlins will be joining us on the Saturday, and racing wil go on all weekend, including some sort of special final race on the Monday. Suggestions welcome.

I am hoping to arrange for boats to be left on site for those going on to the meeting in Aldeburgh the weekend after.

I'm in... Sunday is my birthday, tho not a major one..

The hard decision will be, cartop the minisail, and bring the caravan, or tow the N12 and tent it...

We plan to come too. Will do results and one suggestion would be to do what was successful at Whitefriars and have the main prize giving at Monday lunchtime and an optional pursuit with a separate prize after that, for those who don't need to rush away.

How about making the last race some kind of team event, where the slowest and fastest boats from the previous days get put together?

With racing all weekend, you really need to work out what the people who aren't really that into racing are going to do. I think I've had bigger turnouts with the cvrda and Minisails on the non racing days over the years. It's taken since 1999, but even I'm starting to appreciate life isn't all about racing...

Most non sailors usually choose to go either into Cambridge - the guided busway is right on our doorstep - or into S Ives, which is ten minutes walk from the club. There is an rspb reserve ten minutes drive away, boat trips on the Ouse, loads of stuff. If non sailors let me know what interests them I can set up a little area guide plus get bus times etc.

Cambridge is a tourist and shoppers Mecca, as well as a cultural hub, so really, no shortage of entertainments.

I will also be setting up evening meals with decent veggie choices.

Not non sailors, but sailors who will join in the racing, mainly, because it is there, but actually like to have some unpressured sailing time, boat swapping time, gazing at other boats without getting in the way time, all that sort of thing.

Saturday evening, we could finish racing at a reasonable time, maybe have a meal at the club rather than go out, plenty of sailing time. Sunday racing won't start until 11.30, so time then too.

I find there's a bit of a balance here. Non competitive events can be a bit pointless, and even the slightly competitive events fun can become too competitive to become fun. I like the boat swapping and playing about bit so can we do something to encourage it more? The problem is there's some helms you'd be happy to sail your boat, others less so! Could we mix it up a bit, so we have some competitive events on each day to make it a true 3 day event and some none counting silly events as well?
An individual race for helms sailing a different boat?
A race with a gate which has to be sailed backwards?
A race starting with boats ashore unrigged?
A race where each lap has to be sailed in a different boat?
