Down to one boat......

Post by Stephen Hawkins »

This year, having sold the Firefly, Hastings, and now my son's Moth, BoB, I am in the unusual position of having only one boat.....And 3 berths. But no winter storage - which is the crux of the problem.

Its an odd feeling, as I have been custodian of multiple boats for too many years now.

Not that I can see anything on the Horizon, that currently that takes my fancy.....that isn't beyond be in both cost and ability (i.e. a vintage I14)....

Ho hum.

Oh dear Steve...how are the withdrawal symptoms making themselves felt?

I'm sure that many would agree that there are times when deciding on the next boat and the long protracted hunt for one can be every much as enjoyable as ownership.

That is one of the problems. I had a cast about last week, looking at Apollo Duck, etc, for an idle 10 minutes, but could not find anything classic/vintage that took my fancy.

It might be that I already have my ideal boat.

Certainly, nothing grabbed me, even boat classes that I have owned in the past, for various reasons.

It has to be said, I am still a bit of a clinker nut. I have to have something that is not too strenuous and I do not want anything too race focused.........Unless I can share it with another adult of the same mind set, to make up the crew of a decent weight.

Still, its the end of the season, no need to rush. Got nowhere to put it anyway.

In my highly unscientific research I have found that ribbed clinker gets too heavy ashore for one person when it exceeds 12ft. Glued clinker is lighter so you can stretch to 14ft.

Hmmmm. I think I'm up to seven, three of them Ospreys. I'm running out of space.

Nice 14ft Clinker Lymington pram in my dads garden. Its a serious project though. Dad would love to see her go to a good home. Mast sails etc all there but the hull is a bit of a sorry state.

She is a bit weighty though.

Roger,

It does look like a nice and interesting boat/class and pretty too. Alas, I am not in a position to take on serious rebuilds. Its all I can do to keep a good boat serviceable.

You only have to ask Michael4 about the junk I have passed on to him

Thanks for the thought though.

All Steve's boats ever needed was a wipe with a soft shammy leather...

Have you seen this I14?
A prewar boat which looks quite sound but needs tlc rather than major work.

PS these early 14s are great to sail.

I would rather have this, but my pocket would not stretch and I would have to find an adult crew to sail it, I would expect.

I thought you wanted a bit of work to do!!!!

Actually Challenger is more interesting than it may seem. The description is not correct. Its not an Uffa Fox build or design. But is by Wyche and Coppock from 1949.(built and designed by them according to the records). Now I know you have dabbled with Merlins so I'm sure you know that Wyche and Coppock designed the Rocket in 1949 ( and the rest of the Merlin-Rocket story is well known) . It would be very interesting to stand this next to Garry's rocket and see if the there is any difference in the hull. NB this is clinker like the Rocket rather than carvel which most 14s were so it could be the lack of deck is the only significant difference.

Go for it!

Actually what would probably be more useful would be to have a plastic Paper Dart N12 for the winter.

But the daughter has other ideas.

Oh dear, am I really too old for a National 12, I sail Solos but was toying with the idea of finding a National 12 but if I'm too old I'll forget that idea.
