Down to one boat... each... plus a spare

Post by Rupert »

And only 2 wooden ones, now Toybox 2 is residing with Charlie's 4 year old cousin and Minim has a new home at Severn SC. Just Saskia and Periwinkle left, if exclude a Topper and 2 Lightnings, which aren't cvrda qualified, of course.

What are THE classic GRP dinghies, in people's opinion? Single/doublehanded, doesn't matter, looking for inspiration!

As a Severn SC member I'm very curious as to who has brought minim - I will have to keep my eyes peeled!

Kestrel for the double handler, and of course the Finn for a singlehander, there's a Tiptree on eBay now that would suit you nicely!

The 505 was perhaps the first really major class to move to predominantly glass fibre construction.

If you need a fat bloke in the front of a new Kestrel, I might be your man....

Bosun.......I always think they should have at least one canon fitted. Would not affect the weight much...

Perhaps an Albacore might be the answer, as a powerful two sail boat, it would be ideal for the lake....No need to train for spinnaker work. Finding one at reasonable cost might be more tricky.

Bosun, Kestrel not really my cup of tea. 505 is, but too manly for me to cope with!

What left field boats are there out there?! An old 14 appeals, not proper old, but early 80s, plastic old, the boats that were modern when I was crewing wooden ones at Tamesis every now and again.

I saw that one. Is it glass, though?I used to race against a bright red GRP Kirby VII at Tamesis. Loved it. Compared to the older boats at the club it looked like a space ship!

There are plenty of qualifying wooden Albacores but pre-1985 all GRP ones just don't seem to come onto the market - we got ours from a fellow club member. Fosrite ones had a poor reputation which I think is undeserved from our experience.
It's certainly a boat to use anywhere from small puddles to sea and can be as easy (minimal controls) or complicated (raking rigs etc.) as you wish.
If you want an old Baker Lark which now qualifies, or even a modern one that doesn't, we could supply... :-)

Would a Javelin qualify? Always liked the look of them.

SInce AGM Javelins are now legit CVRDA. (Trial period.)
Personally I would have said yes as they are indeed a handsome boat. (Someone somewhere said "like a miniature FD.")
Even more miniaturised FD (I am told) and also now a very handsome and legit CVRDA is a Non carbonised, Alloy spar Contender.

Both will enhance the fleet.
