Yachting Monthly Junior?

Post by dronskiuk »

Not ever seen one but have heard the name....but it's not on the database?

Any ideas, positive IDs or is it just utilising an old set of sails?

Reminds me of a Heron, except for the low boom, and the fact that a Heron is 11' 3" if I recall.

Cadet fleet was probably too well established for the boat to threaten......

As an ex 'Cadet parent' I used to take a lot of prospective crews and sail in a Heron within the Cadet fleet at my old club - as their respective performances were not so different. I even fitted it with a Cadet spinnaker as a training aid for me and my lad. Can't teach if you don't know...

Doesn't answer your question though, sorry.

I thought Heron straight away too !.

I often get "spare" Cadet crews dumped in my mirror, if I am out cruising at scsc on a Saturday morning.

They are usualy the tiny little ones that none of the Cadets want.

Nothing changes at SCSC then, it was the club I was referring to......

I've come across the answer:
Boat-builder Kenneth Gibbs designed the 13ft 6in Junior in 1954 and the 16ft Senior in 1955 for the Yachting Monthly series of sponsored designs. Instructions for building both the YM Junior and YM Senior can be found in the book “Building Chine Boats” by Michael Verney.

What excellent research skills, thank you!

I had a vague recollection from magazines or boat lists from my youth (sixties!) of this...now seems to have been sold but will keep an eye out as it's relatively local.

My thanks once again!
