I have a Photon dinghy for sale. Though it's not a classic, it's interesting enough to merit attention here, I think. It's a sixteen foot twin trapeze GRP and Kevlar skiff, which was marketed before the International 14s introduced the twin trapeze. It's light, and with a generous sail area it didn't take much of a breeze to get it planing into wind: the fastest dinghy that I ever sailed, including my Flying Dutchman. I think that only 5 boats were built, and this was number 3. It is very distinctive, with a purple and lime green mainsail! There wasn't enough interest to warrant increasing production, possibly because there was no spinnaker with it. In my opinion it didn't need it though! I'm open to offers, and if you're interested I can send some pictures. Mail me at [email protected]

Have emailed, Stewart. Could keep C and I amused for a while! I remember the Photon from the dinghy show in the early 90s.

I remember having a conversation with the editor of Yachts and Yachting. He remembered them testing the Photon. His opinion was that it was definitely fast, but, in his own words "over canvassed"!
Re: PHOTON TWIN TRAPEZE SKIFF
Oh, I would love to see some more photos. Well I guess we all would.
Drop me an email at ed <at> cvrda.org with them and I will add to this topic.
I don't remember it at all. Must of missed me by entirely which is strange.
Looks like a ton of fun. Would certainly love to know more.
Best wishes

Re: PHOTON TWIN TRAPEZE SKIFF
Interestingly I googled 'Photon Skiff' and got the following:
The photon-skiff:
is a very light keel with lugs to hook spacesuits to;
has a mile-long steel cable kept at right angles to the keel by a small inertia-controlled atomic reactor at the far end;
on the cable, a mile-square zirconium foil sail rigged with other small reaction motors by radio control;
in the Coal Sack nebula, will respond to dust squalls, radiation storms, other disturbances, light pressure and slow neutrons.
If that is all that the skiff is, then how does Dr Langer get it to pass the speed of light? (p. 98) Jack, watching, does not understand this and I don't think that he ever finds out?

Now that would be a boat.

Ahh yes, Now you'd be picking up a bit of disturbance from starwars there:Ed wrote:Interestingly I googled 'Photon Skiff' and got the following:

Solar wind is basically a stream of photons, (it being a unit of electromagnetic radiation travelling at the speed of light.
(talking of which was everyone watching the Americas cup??)
There is a rather cool spaceship in starwars that Count Dooku "sails" on the Solar wind...
