Good morning all,
They say that there is a first time for everything and today, this is IT!
I'm doing something I've never done before and am writing about Flying 15s - their history, character, current state and future . This does give me a chance to feature some of the superb classic 15s that I have seen.
If you have a picture of a glorious boat, that or any 15 in a glorious setting OR - one of those little nugget gems about the boat (I already have some previously unpublished little factoids that I'm using) then as always - yes please.
"watch this space".....for more details but for now, thanks to you all
Dougal

Re: For my next trick....Flying 15s!
Lovely looking boats, been passed by them a few times, crews always seem relaxed.
Once saw one on it's side, not sure what had gone wrong, didn't think keel boats could capsize.

I have classic 15s 617 'Fettercairn' and 1155 'Squall', both built by Chippendale. 617 (registered 1963) is in full commission and we're off to Ullswater with her this weekend, as well as participating in the northern travellers series for the class, kindly sponsored by Waples Wines. 1155 (registered 1969)needs some cosmetic work and a full revarnish, but could be sailed now if necessary. I hope to have her out sometime next year.
If you look at the BFFA website under the classic section, I wrote a fair bit of the copy, which will give you some guide about the older boats as well as buying one. http://www.flying15.org.uk/classic-and-silver-f15
I would post some pictures but the file sizes are too big, but if you PM me a contact, I'll send you some by WeTransfer and maybe you can find a way to post them.
Incidentally, if you want to see Fifteens being built the old way, there is an excellent YouTube video of Kircubbin club members building them in the late Forties/early Fifties: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e3eYwN-q-Y

Re: For my next trick....Flying 15s!
I had a look at the Kirkcubbin video. There's a few pictures of Coweslip's hull going on Uffa's car roof. I always wondered how many people it took to do this. I counted quite a few, five or six people on each side, but then I suppose dropping HRH's boat wasn't really an option! The bit that wasn't there was putting the keel in the boot as mentioned in Uffa's "Sailing boats". How many hands does it take to load a 400lbs +/-25lbs keel?
Another question answered is that you can dry out an FF on its side without it flooding when the tide comes in. So I now know I can keep one in the creek provided it dries out uphill.
Also I loved the way the keel stays upright when you lift the hull off it. Designed to do it or just luck?

Re: For my next trick....Flying 15s!
Graham,
am doing well for pictures but I want to make an extra reference to the enlightened way that the FF fleet are embracing things with their silver and classic fleets. What I'd like if possible is a really nice picture of a classic FF - preferably one that we can use.
The article is coming together really nicely - should be on Y&Y in a month or so.
Many thanks

Dougal - for a good classic 15 look no further than the event pictures from Aldeburgh, both last year and this, where a beautiful classic FF (202 IIRC) came all the way from Perth.
