The new forum

Post by neil »

It looks like everything is working, the private messaging works well, emailing members works and you can now upload an avatar if you so wish.

So now that the forum software is stable I can think about the structure. Do we have the right topics here? Are the current ones sufficent or would you like to see different areas?

Currently we have:

Welcome
Announcements

Boats
Boat Chat
Boats and bits for sale
Boats and bits wanted

Events
Events

CVRDA stuff
CVRDA organisation

If you have any suggestions for additional forums/topics let me know

regards

I think that these topics have worked well for ages and I don't see any reason to want to change them really.....

I think there is more danger from having too many topics.

so for me.....I am happy with them as they are

cheers

I am not madly against the idea......but still am not too sure.

I don't like having forum topics that are not used. I think we should only start a new topic if there is another which is becoming unwieldy due to the number of posts.

So - A suggestion to start an e-bay topic to separate those posts from other boats for sale.....maybe.

A suggestion for a 'What is this class' to separate those from 'boats' ....maybe again.

But I am not convinced that starting a topic for the under-25s or anything else will create new postees.

I run other forums with tons of topics....each with 1 or 2 posts in and it looks crap.

I say keep it simple and only expand if we need to stop confusion.

Re: encouraging under-25s......

All for it....just not sure that this is the way.

Would strongly suggest that the new CVRDA Facebook group may well be a much better place to do it.....not that there are any under-25s on that at the moment.....but that might change Greg?

The thing about a Forum (arguably not on Facebook) is that you are offered a fair amount of anonymity and it is therefore not apparent what age, sex, class, colour etc you are. I like that. I would encourage any and all people interested in classic boats to drop in. I trust they would all get a polite welcome.

Ah.....politeness on the forum....now there is a completely different topic...and maybe one I will return to!

cheers

Topic for general chat?

Post by Ed »

One topic that may be of use is just one for general chat?

For things not related directly to boats....or events....or anything else.

But personally I don't think there is a great demand.

I agree about the forums, less is more. I think age related posting is not a good idea. I have removed myself from facebook having read a well thought out article in the FT about being over 40.

I like the new forum look very much.

can you send link for article in Guardian re Facebook and being over 40.

Neil and I had much discussion about this at Nats.

Basically we thought (and personal family/friend/work experience suggests)

Bebo is for Kids......our 13/14 years olds are never off it. You or I would be considered perverts for even joining.

MySpace is for Kids to Teenagers..... some use by younger ones through to 18/19

Facebook is for Students through to adults with mainly academic interests. But USA has bigger take up through all ages.

Second Life is for anyone with lots of time on hands and big PC.

But interested in your thoughts

cheers

After much searching on FT.com

Should I be on Facebook?

No. If jeans belong to us, techno-networking belongs to them. Here is an overriding principle of the rules: each generation must be allowed to have its own thing. As a young person, you can ape the style of a previous generation - it is done all the time - but you cannot dictate to it. As a middle-aged person, you should recognise the tics and lifestyle of those who will succeed you but never succumb to their more extravagant trends. Broadly speaking, cultural revolution was our thing, technological revolution is theirs. This is no excuse, of course, for being computer-illiterate. You must ride the waves of society's innovations but not in bright-red surfer shorts.

Great!

I have a long train trip tomorrow and I can read it then.

Only skimmed it but amused me.

Looked like I agree with some bits....but maybe not others.

Certainly don't think that 'techno-networking belongs to them'.

That is what we do here and I guess my original point (and yours I think) was that aged-related communication channels were maybe not the right way to go within a community such as this, which has no age-agenda or age-limits.

Web2 is largely about 'techno-networking' . 'techno-networking' is what drives online communities.

It will happen whether middle aged FT readers do it or not!!!

It works, its fun, it takes up as little or as much time as you want it to.

Come on Trevor.....prove them all wrong....re-open your Facebook account and join the CVRDA group

:D

cheers

But, there is all the stress about how many "friends" you have, should you accept new contacts etc etc. Still, maybe I will. I will think about it whilst I iron a neat crease in the front of my jeans.

Age is irrelevant, unless you are cheese.

OK, I admit I have a vested interest in Social Networking and Web 2.0 technologies as I run a number of projects that are linked to these areas.

At the end of the day they are just tools, forget about the hype - and the misinformed articles written by bored hacks. Social Networking may not be for everyone, but it certainly gets a message/information out to a wider audience.

Web 2.0 technologies (content sharing, syndication, social networking, user defined content) are the future of the internet. Actually I'm wrong - they are not the future, they are pretty much the backbone of the Internet.

If you want to go to the next stage of Web2.0ness get an iGoogle page
and add the CVRDA RSS feed to it - rss.php
