Great to see the BFA doing something for the older boats, but was amused Classic and Vintage Finns have been defined in a certain way, but the date used is the CVRDA classification. With an ever increasing Classic Finn fleet, the BFA Committee would like to invite all owners of classic Finns to join us at the Inland Championships at Northampton Sailing Club on October 18-19. Several classic boats have already pledged to go, so come along and join the fun.
As a trial for this event the BFA would like to offer all Finns built before 1985, (as per the CVRDA classification), the chance to sail at the Inland Championships for their own prizes in one of two categories, alongside the race boat fleet:
• Classic – any pre 1985 hull with any rig
• Vintage – any pre 1985 hull with an alloy rig
The venue is small inland reservoir that is well protected with safe launching, and is a very friendly club that provides food and beer at a good rate. Camping is available on-site and a social has been arranged for Saturday evening with food.
We hope we can bank on your support at this event as a forerunner to more events in 2015, including the Nationals Championships. It would be great to have a discussion with Classic Finn owners at Northampton to identify how we can best take Classic Finn racing forward alongside the more recent boats and give Classic racing greater exposure.

Just seen this on the classic Finn site (http://classicfinn.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=580)
Re: Finn's use of Classic and Vintage
It's the result of a discussion on the classic Finn site and the desire of the BFA to increase participation at their events.

Re: Finn's use of Classic and Vintage
Hi Peter
I have suggested to Martin that the BFA use the term Old for boats using Carbon Rigs Mylor as this may cause confusion with the CVRDA and Classic National definition of Classic.
Cheers Alan

Re: Finn's use of Classic and Vintage
Following discussions at the Finn Inlands where 6 classics sailed among the modern fleet, the Finns have decided that there will be 2 divisions, Classics using the CVRDA definition and 'Classics with Carbon' for those who update their classic to a more modern rig or swap the rig from their modern boat.

good. I wish the Merlins would adopt the same sensible approach.

Re: Finn's use of Classic and Vintage
I suggest that we should let the current Merlin Vintage wing be the equivalent of the Finn classics with carbon and we form a new Historic Wing within the class association that equates to the Finn classic wing with the basic premise of sailing the old boats un-modernised

Sounds like a good idea Pat, do what the Finns did, grow it within CVRDA until the Merlins want you back!

But would we want to go back to the Merlins?PeterV wrote:Sounds like a good idea Pat, do what the Finns did, grow it within CVRDA until the Merlins want you back!
The comment has already been made about "The real vintage Merlin fleet" growing nicely in the west country.
