This evening I discovered a patch of rot on Citrene, (Pegasus 48) I kinda expected it when I bought her, but as a wooden boat newbie I wanna know what's the right way to fix it.
The inside of her has been coated in epoxy, some of which was flaking off around the base of the centre board case. So I started poking around with a screw driver and sure enough underneath is soft wood. So I keep going and now have a 14 inch gash along the main keel plank, not sure on terminology? I got scared at the amount to wood I was pulling away so stopped.
So what do I do now? Do I just keep ripping out wood? How do I avoid too much damage. Is filling with epoxy filler really gonna sort it.
All help and advice gratefully received.
ok so you find rotten wood, what do I do next?
Re: ok so you find rotten wood, what do I do next?
Firstly, stop! Before you carry on, allow the area to dry out. Wet wood can act like rotten wood, and can be saveable once dry.

I agree with Rupert, there are 2 routes you can go down the first as I did at the start is with wet wood end up cutting lots of wood out, or the other sensible route is get the boat inside and dry it throughly for a few weeks then reassess what work is needed.
Hope this helps

Re: ok so you find rotten wood, what do I do next?
To give you guys a better idea I have set up a Flickr account for Citrene
https://www.flickr.com/photos/129843684 ... 478587988/
Lots of better pics there. Ones taken with a real camera not a phone
Basically where ever i have seen epoxy lifting i have poked under it with screw driver and in most places gone into soft wood which crumbles away, Some patches have just been black wood, which i assume is just very damp ant will dry out.
Main ones are these
Rot under Mast step

Rot under centerboard casing

Looking better already now that its drying out
